A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...Also known as England, 1818.
After being denied permission to accompany a merchant vessel on its journey across the English Channel, Dedra Meero is assigned a new task by her guardian, Lio Partagaz--to travel to his estate in the Welsh countryside and pay a visit to the local tenant farmers.
While dealing with a particularly troublesome farmer, Syril Karn, Dedra realizes that he has all the potential makings of a respectable gentleman, and decides that she can restore him to his former rank before she is due to return to London. The arrangement will benefit both of them--Syril will finally get a taste of the glamorous life he has always wanted, and Dedra can form, through him, connections that she was previously not allowed to have as a woman in London high society.
However, as the barriers of class and gender between them are brought down, the distance between them is also lessened. And the closer they get, the more the two of them begin to question the validity of the systems that kept them separated in the first place.
