“Wait!” Valjean very nearly shouted again, despairing. “You would have me bear witness to this?”
His voice carried strangely, surrounding Javert where he stood upon the parapet, not quite an echo. It settled warmly in his chest, like sunlight on a spring day to his deciduous heart. He could not account for this feeling. It grated against his misery, teasing at something like hope in his own sorry breast. What a cruel trick it was, to try to steal his hopelessness.
“I did not ask for you to be here,” Javert said, his own desperation beginning to bleed into his tone of voice. “You are free to leave me at any time.”
“Surely you must know I cannot do that.”
“Avert your gaze, then,” he said, near to a growl, “and let me be.”

“Perhaps, after tonight, the law no longer drives me as it has all my life. And if the law does not drive me, I do not know what will.”
Valjean sighs, stepping closer so they face each other on opposite sides of the doorway.
“I know you, Javert. You may not like it, but I know you. I know the sense of purpose you speak of. That kind of drive doesn’t just go away. I believe that kind of passion conveys more about the person who feels it, rather than the cause of the passion. Even if it wanes with time, even if it is a source other than the law that moves you, you will find that drive again. You will find something to direct it to.”

Months after Valjean pulls Javert from the Pont au Change, they both find themselves without purpose. Valjean becomes hopeless without Cosette to care for. Meanwhile, Javert's growing doubt about his place in the police force leaves him aimless. But Javert and Valjean's lives have always been irreversibly intertwined. As they learn what it means to change and be changed, they may find that their lives are meant to intertwine in a way neither of them ever expected.
In case anyone needed another post-Seine Valvert slow burn ;)

Curse him. Curse his name and this supposed gift he’d given of life. Even Javert’s final thought, submerged willfully in the cold waters of the Seine, was littered with the remnants of Jean Valjean. Let him be free. Let the water wash away the curse inflicted on his soul. Let him die now, too tormented to wait in agony for a natural death, even if it meant the remainder of his soul would go to Lucifer’s domain. Let his eternal life be one of misery, as he deserved. Perhaps Valjean would meet him there, but Javert did not think it so.
