Kakashi stared. And stared. And stared and stared and stared some more, but he still can't seem to get enough of what he was seeing.
But then this was a world in war, all was still in hell, they had war dogs beyond the borders and inside the walls, and Gai was all but lost since Kakashi daren't remembered and - could Kakashi even say he was a good friend to Gai? He couldn't even, shame on him, remember the last time he'd actually talked to Gai OR bothered to keep tabs on his well-being or life (that was ages, years ago, right after Gai had just received his chuunin vest and almost immediately went MIA with his entire team after their dispatch to what was supposedly a deadly mission), so naturally, of course Kakashi wouldn't know if the bastard sired a son or not.
"Hey, kid, sorry for staring so much. Where's your mother? Or father?"
"I have no parents. I'm an orphan."
And Kakashi, senior in living through this cruel, cruel world, but had his - he was proud of it, he begrudgingly admitted so - talents and ingenuity to survive on, was going to make sure this child survived in this world.

But not everything's fair and kind, so when he thinks he's finally kicked the bucket - maybe, just maybe, god decided to bless him with a Magic Pop Candy he could use for the next few moments to come. The Magic Pop Candy who's a ghost he'd forgotten about.

It takes hours of patience, hours of silent sneaking and mini stakeouts at key locations until finally, finally Hitoshi manages to spot a sparking yellow and black figure slipping out the window of a nondescript building and free climbing up the cracked brick wall to get onto the roof.
A feral grin pulls at Hitoshi’s lips as he pulls his mouth gear up and clicks it into place.
