And he plays guitar, and I guess I just got in the way of him being all—” Ray mashed his hands together, his palms sliding against one another. “Y-you know?” He suddenly felt shy - he’d never felt shy in front of a nurse before. “And, um, the butt of it just, totally sliced me open.” He gestured to the drying blood all over the side of his face, which had dripped all the way down to his eye, crusting over his eyelashes.

He remembers the first time Ray found him lying motionless on the bed, his breathing shallow as he tried to will himself to move and take the meds the doctor prescribed for his sciatica. They’d only been dating a few months then. Gerard still vividly remembers the way Ray all but moved onto Gerard’s couch and carried him around for a week. It was sweet. It felt natural.
He guesses they just always worked well together.Gerard, a professor with a reputation that precedes him, is not as stern as rumors would have you believe. Ray knows something about that, particularly when Gerard returns from a conference and is just as stubborn as ever.
