Phainon stops. Just—stops. Her breath catches, her thoughts skid to a halt, and her eyes almost bulge out of her head. She tries to swallow, chokes on it, and Mydei snorts out a laugh at her expense.
“Is that so surprising to you?” Mydei’s eyes glint when Phainon glances over, and she quickly looks away.

He looks up just in time to see Spider twist awkwardly, one hand hovering behind him like he's afraid to actually touch whatever's happening there.
Then it moves. Just a twitch.
Lo'ak's eyes go wide.
"...Is that—" He squints. "No way."
His fingers brush skin, warm, sensitive, and then something longer. Covered in fine, downy hair. Flexible and alive.
He yelps and nearly falls off the root.
"I GREW A TAIL!" he shrieks.

Phainon blinks as she watches Mydei say, hand. The puppy reaches her paw out, placing it on Mydei's palm. Click. A treat, a murmur of praise. Good, good, good.
"Sit up," Mydei demands. Phainon doesn't even recognize what she's doing until seconds later; tomato-faced at the dawning realization that she'd straightened her own spine, slightly, at Mydei's words. A flutter in her chest when that click sounds, and Mydei coos, "Good puppy."
And, well, Phainon is ridiculously, profoundly, severely fucked.
or - Phainon has been dropping by the pet shelter Mydei volunteers at often, and seems to have discovered something new about herself along the way.

Summary
Here is the ocean village. He can’t remember its name, but he can remember someone saying that it was surrounded by deep water on all sides. It’s the second they’ve come to, the second they’re tearing to pieces, the second they’re searching. Here, is among screaming, panicking villagers.
Here is under the scrutiny of so many people, expecting so much from him.
Maybe if he was a bit more…normal. A bit more like them, what was happening around him wouldn’t seem as bad. The violence wouldn’t be as shocking.
It wouldn’t make him feel as if he’s about to be sick over his own toes.
He really doesn’t want to be here.
“Translate.”
That’s growled at him, most likely to intimidate and scare him. It’s deep and low, like the growling of the ship’s engines just outside the reef. But, like the first two times, it just makes him confused.
Translate what? No one’s spoken, how can he–
“That is a forest clan member,” the man before him says, slow and pronounced over the crackling of flames. “They do not come here. Please, tell him!”

Summary
The undergrowth rustles as something pushes through. Neytiri holds her position, bow lifted to her shoulder, string remaining slack.
She stops breathing all together when it reveals itself.
Pink pale skin, bright hair helplessly tangled and a small body that shouldn’t be able to walk as freely as it does on her planet peeks through. Neytiri’s breath becomes short with rage as it slowly approaches the river bank, using all four limbs in a kind of imitation of a viperwolf’s loping walk. The edges of her sight turn dark as it turns to the traps in the water.
A skyperson has been stealing food from her people. A pink skin, whose kind has already taken so much from her planet, deigns to feed itself on their catches. Distantly, she knows she’s becoming incensed, but she can’t help it. Her rage burns through her consciousness so quickly that she’s drawing back an arrow before she can even think about it.

There is something—or rather, someone—out there, Phainon knows. Not out on the horizon, floating above the beds of shellfish and tangled kelp, but here, on the sandy shores. Every time he just so happens to wash up on the beach, as mermen do when the sun is warm and the tides are gentle, he wakes to… offerings.
A patterned shell. A pretty stone or two. Sometimes, if he's lucky, a plate with generous portions of stewed fish and charred vegetables.
Those are his favorite. It's not often he gets to taste food cooked with fire, after all.
Phainon is a merman from the underwater town of Aedes Elysiae. Mydei is the mystery guest who tucks him in and keeps him fed when he washes ashore.

Her voice trails off. Phainon feels her cheeks flush pink as the implication catches up to her.
"You don't mean—"
"What, getting shy on me now?" Mydei raises an eyebrow. It would be humiliating if she weren't so turned on. “You never had a problem using them on me.”
Mydei wants to watch Phainon fuck herself on her own tentacles. Phainon doesn't know this, of course.
