“I went—” Peter starts, whispering, “I went back. To the boat.” His voice wavers on, “You weren’t there.”

Something in Frank’s expression shatters. “Peter.”

“It’s okay. I mean, ‘s fucked up, but it’s okay.” He still doesn’t put any weight on the trigger. His finger’s barely on it. “You’re here now.”

Without the furrow in his brow, Frank’s eyes are large and dark, nearly doe-like in their glassiness. It’s disconcerting, seeing a man so dangerous with a face so open and vulnerable.

    “Kid?”

He closes his eyes, breathing out. He can do it.

    Summary

“I’ve thought about it,” Jean admits, words disappearing into the snow-dampened twilight. Fingers reddened and numb from the cold, they finally start to shake as he attempts to wrap them around the railing. A dusting of snow lands on the top of his boots.

“Haven’t we all?” Trant says softly. His hand is warm on Jean’s shoulder. It trembles slightly, scratching at the fitted seams of Jean’s RCM uniform.

“You? Really?” The crack in Jean’s voice somehow closes the gap between them.

Trant laughs. “Me. Really.” He squeezes Jean’s shoulder before moving his hand to Jean’s elbow. When Trant takes a step back, Jean follows, guided by the way Trant has locked their arms together. “Are you ready to give your statement now?”

    “Give me another minute.”

Five times Satellite-Officer Jean Vicquemare consulted Trant Heidelstam on a case and the one time Trant consulted Jean, organized by case. A series of connected vignettes set before, during, and after THE HANGED MAN.
