Summary
Ilya in 2014 had no idea his time with Hollander was so limited — something that Ilya in 2016 knows all too well.
Ilya in 2016 is also playing hockey like shit. The version of himself on the television misses an easy shot, and the commentators tear him apart for it. Ilya, watching from his bed, is inclined to agree with them. His father’s decline is almost a blessing this month, when his usual level of vitriol would be for once so entirely deserved.
He’s thinking about all of this, beer in hand, when there’s a knock on his door.

By far the most balanced portrayal of the painful parts of their history I’ve ever seen. All the ways in which Shane’s panic is grounded in having been hurt every time their relationship dynamic deepens and becomes more intimate. It’s also nice to see a version of them that does communicate earlier and better. They’re both very brave and willing very vulnerable with each other here. Satisfying.

Ilya is…he’s Shane’s entire heart. The air that he breathes, the reason for everything he does. None of it would matter without Ilya. This is the closest he’s ever come to losing him, and the thought of it - the possibility that everything they’ve been fighting for could just be lost - had struck Shane so acutely, so agonisingly.
He’d once thought that losing hockey was the worst thing that could ever happen to him. He knows, now, that isn’t true.

Alternate take on canon that masterfully incorporates the original events in new ways that completely make sense for the scenario. Also characterization is super fleshed out—like, I completely buy that this is the way they talk to each other and the conversations that a real human would actually have in these situations beneath the events Rachel Reid gave us.
