Ashton hums, then lets out a triumphant sound and pulls out Green Day’s American Idiot, grinning at Michael. He asks distractedly as he pops it into the CD player, “Is your seatbelt on?” and then proceeds to enthusiastically air-guitar along the opening notes coming out of the speakers.
Michael blinks at him.
Ashton turns to him, still bopping along to the music, looks at him expectantly. His eyebrows quirk up as if to say, so?
“What—of course it is.”

“I meant single,” Ashton clarifies, smile still playing at the corner of his lips. “Do you wanna be single. You bozo.”
“Oooh,” Luke nods, fake-awed, “makes sense now, wow.”
Ashton bumps his shoulder into Luke’s with a snort, shakes his head, and the action is paired with an exasperated but fond smile and Luke feels warm in the chill of the night breeze. His heart skips a beat when Ashton’s eyes land on him, steady and intent, and all of his sharp edges look soft in the moonlight and artificial halo from the windows.
Luke looks away.

I’m not the one who said he had a crush!” The words are soaked and laden with four years worth of grief and regret, two years of being chewed like cud in Mike’s stupid, slow mouth, four months of swimming in his gut with cheap alcohol and shitty microwave dinners.

Will smiled, pleased at that. “I do know,” he said loftily, and Mike got the sense he really did, and frequently used it against him to get his way. “But I like it when you tell me.”
Mike wakes ten years in the future, a successful novelist and in a committed relationship with Will.

It's the summer of 1988 and Mike Wheeler is a coward. He's so in love it's sickening, but even when the world was ending last year, he couldn't bring himself to admit it.
