Summary

When a midnight visit to the frozen gardens turns into something far stranger, Morgana speaks with a voice that is not her own, foretelling a crown, a sword, a betrayal by blood, and a king borne back across hidden waters. By morning, she is ill. Soon after, she is taken from Camelot to be trained in the old magic.
Years later, Morgana returns changed, with Merlin at her side and Avalon’s will at her back. Her task is simple: ensure Arthur takes up the crown meant for him.
Her heart has other plans.

Both Merlin and the tiny bundle of fluff that he was holding gave him identical pleading looks, which Arthur told himself was not in the least endearing. “Arthur, come on,” Merlin wheedled, hugging the squirming puppy a little tighter against his chest. “Haven’t you always wanted a dog?”
OR: Merlin adopts a puppy. Arthur has absolutely no problems with this whatsoever.

“I wouldn’t touch the Major Arcana.” Arthur startled, nearly dropping the cards. He whirled around to the voice. “They get twitchy.”
An ornamental crystal ball fell onto the floor behind him, shattering into millions of tiny pieces.
Behind him was a man, probably near Arthur’s age. He registered the wide, bright eyes, pale skin, and dark hair. Arthur hadn’t heard him approach. Where did he come from?
“The—” Arthur’s eyes jumped back to the magician card, “Major Arcana?”
That sounded sort of... magicky
“Yes, yes, they get so full of themselves.” The man’s lips twitched, and Arthur was inexplicably drawn to the hint of his grin.
Or, a lot can happen when you take cover under a random shop's awning. Mostly, Arthur just wants to figure out why 'The Magician' card is always his future.

This story was inspired by the thought of Prince William of Wales (and indeed the current Max von Hapsburg) studying at the University of St Andrews; it is also, as the title suggests, at least a little inspired by the operetta 'The Student Prince'.

::2019 note: This story was written BEFORE the TV show introduced the character of Gwaine. It's not that I can't spell, or that I'm perversely writing him out of character - I incorporated other characters from Arthurian legend (Kay, Gawain etc) into my story, and lacking prophetic abilities, my versions naturally don't mesh with the versions subsequently introduced into the show.::

His eyes meet Mark’s, teasing just as much as they are serious. “I can teach you how to touch me.”
(Mark could navigate Donghyuck blind, but he supposes a set of whispered instructions in his ear wouldn’t hurt.)
