    Summary

Dennis liked routines, plans, things that happened when he knew they were going to happen. When his friends said that they wanted to hang out later, he just wanted to know what they were doing, what time they were meeting up, and who was coming. Any last-minute plans were often declined; he never felt prepared for that. He just wanted to be prepared.

Dennis didn’t start the new step in his routine; it just happened one day on a random Wednesday in May, nothing special about that day other than the start of receiving his coffee order from Dr Robby. He knew he didn't break the routine either; Robby did because he got a girlfriend.

It's fine, they were just friends, colleagues, mentor and mentee. Then why did it feel like he was going through a breakup?

    Summary

“Woah— don’t go dying on me there.” Robby mumbled, a tense chuckle punctuating his words. Dennis scrambled to speak, to create any combination of words that would save him from the shitstorm brewing right in front of his eyes.

“I’m—“ he took in a wheezy breath, throat gradually clearing of the offending hoppy suds now sprayed out on the table in front of him. “I’m okay— I’m okay Robby. Sorry I didn’t mean to- I mean— it’s not like I’m—“

“Nice hat, Huckleberry.” Fuck, Trinity. The comfort of being saved of an explanation was quickly replaced with a white hot embarrassment at the reminder of the teasing grin that was still plastered on his roommate's face. His teary eyes met hers as she leaned in close to his ear, picking up Dennis’s hat in one smooth motion and placing it on her own head. “Didn’t know you were in the business of saving horses.”

    --

There are some unspoken rules when it comes to properly wearing a cowboy hat. Dennis knows these rules. Robby does not.

    Summary

Robby occasionally uses Grindr for anonymous, no-strings-attached hookups. He takes a chance messaging a much younger guy, and their fun night together prompts another, and then another. Robby likes the kid, worries about him, thinks it could be nice to keep seeing him-

And then Dennis Whitaker walks into the Pitt as an MS4 with Robby's coffee mug in his hand.

    Summary

Dennis really hates that his first thought is one of immediate discontentment at the notion that Robby is at all upset with him. The hatred soon turns to shame and embarrassment when he really realizes just how worked up he’s gotten himself these past few days. He feels it all at once: the anxiety for his future, the constant fear of making an irreversible mistake, the shame over this stupid schoolboy crush on his attending, and most of all, a smothering feeling of anger for himself. Anger that he can’t do everything at once, anger that he might be throwing away everything he’s worked for because he can’t find time to study for this stupid exam. And he’s even more angry when he feels his bottom lip begin to quiver and his eyes welling up with tears. Right in front of Dr. Robby.

Or: Dennis panics about an upcoming exam. Robby invites him to his home to study.

    Summary

“Here.” The male EMT handed Robby a syringe. “Five milligrams of Versed.” He shrugged. “We were going to give it to him but he calmed down once he saw the needle.”
“Huh,” Robby said. “Normally you get the opposite effect.” He looked down at the patient. “You made the right choice, Jamie.”
Jamie just stared. Jesus, those pupils were huge. He was calm though, which was a good sign. Maybe it was something easy, like a small dose of LSD. That would be amazing. Obviously not for Jamie, who was probably going through a drug-induced ordeal, but great for his doctor, who wanted to shower and watch Great British Bake Off with his roommate.
