“You know so much about everything, Snufkin,” Moomin says, feeling a little awed. “It’s no wonder why you leave us every year. There are amazing things waiting for you out there.”
A pause. Snufkin hesitates, which is very unlike him-- he usually says exactly what he’s thinking. Slowly, carefully, he says, “There are amazing things waiting for me here, too. That’s why I always come back.”
Moomin lays there looking at him, and feels very warm. Like someone poured a cup of tea into his heart, on just the right side of burning. It’s absurdly comfortable, and Moomin is absurdly happy.
Snufkin looks back at him with serious eyes, reaching across the tiny space between them to touch Moomin's face with gentle fingers.
“I’ll always come back,” he says, like it’s a promise.

winter has been long, and spring seems to refuse to come. Living on the road is no longer fun when you can't warm up and your belly is empty. Little Snufkin is sick, and Joxter must make a decision. take his chances out on the road, or go back to moominvalley where moominpappa and a broken heart are waiting.
(sort of a re-write of tiny kitten teeth, now longer and more coherent. something to read while we're all stuck at home!)

Summary
Any time he returned to mom, she was loose and laughing and had that smell again. One time she sloshed red wine onto his white trainers and laughed about it even though he was seconds from bursting into tears.
This time, though -- the last time he truly asked his father for anything -- she looked at him from her position on Mrs Diver's chaise-longue and allowed her face to soften in sympathy at his puffy bottom lip and half-formed tears. She pulled him into her lap, all silks and furs and wine on her breath and said:
"You walk around the world like you've got a layer of skin missing, Stevie. Like everything hurts you that bit more."
Steve doesn't remember much after that, figuring he fell asleep. But he wonders if that's how El feels; walking around this world that has taken so much from her -- that had given her so little in the first place. At least Steve has a mom, even if she is perpetually intoxicated. At least he has a dad, even if that dad hates him.
El had Hopper, and the Russians took him from her. From them. The Russians murdered him and god, Steve wishes it had been him instead.
