To accomplish this, he cooked up an absolutely ridiculous story about Baoshen Sanren that no one would believe besides his half-dead shidi, who would take any chance at this point.
No one told Baoshen Sanren she can't be on a random hillside in Yiling, however.

He was /planning/ to have a little fun with them and make them appear a little drunk by the poison to draw on their golden cores. What he did not know is that Wei Wuxian would step in and -because he has no core- just collapse immediately in the middle of the banquet.
