Summary
“’M sorry,” Buck found himself saying. “‘M sorry you’re the one ‘ere. It shouldn’t be you. ‘M sorry to have to—have to watch me ‘ie.”
“Don’t say that,” Eddie begged, and fuck—Buck realized he was crying. “No one is dying, you hear me?”
Buck nodded weakly, willing himself to believe Eddie, clinging to that fierce hope even as darkness crept closer.
There was still one thing left unsaid—the words he wanted to say most—but they got swallowed by the shadows.
And the last thing Buck thought, as the cold pulled him under, was that maybe he should have kissed Eddie anyway.
Or, sometimes it takes a new Taylor Swift album and a near death experience to face your feelings.

Summary
“Call it destiny, fate, the current—whatever name you want. Some things, you can’t outrun.”
Eddie narrows his eyes. “I don’t know if I buy that.”
“Then you believe everything could have been different?”
He doesn’t need to think. Yes. He knows it in his bones —the endless what-ifs that chew at him every night. What if he’d never enlisted? Been a better husband? Stayed in El Paso? Never joined the 118? Never met—
He swallows the last thought. “Guess we’ll never know.”
Amelia studies him, her expression unreadable. For a moment she looks older, carrying something that feels too heavy for her years. Eddie shifts under the weight of her gaze.
“I guess we’ll never know,” she echoes softly.
Or, in every universe, Eddie Diaz finds a way to fall for Evan Buckley. And in every universe, he finds a way to ruin it — until fate decides to give him one last chance to get it right.

“But Edvan—”
“Eddie, that sounds like medicine.”
“But Buddie sounds like buddy and I call you ‘buddy,’” he argued, and suddenly that word didn’t feel real anymore.
“What’s wrong with that?”
“I’m not calling you by our ship name. It’s weird.”
“So you agree it’s our ship name.”
Or, the kids demand to know what Buck and Eddie's ship name would be. It's a very serious conversation.

Summary
“...Hollander,” He hears Rozanov say, urgent like it’s not the first time he’s said it. “Shane,” he follows it up with, and that snaps him out of it. He’s never called him that. Shane, reluctantly, lifts his face a little, eyes glazed over as he meets Rozanov’s eyes.
“What?”
“You stink,” Rozanov says, concern dripping. “No, you—fuck. You reek. What is—” Ilya’s fingers lift up, tugging at the scent patch, revealing more of the spot beneath it. Even Shane can smell himself at that point. He does reek. Reeks of heat, of Omega, of honey and sweetness, of something that would melt on your tongue.
Shane reefs himself back. The Omega inside him aches, mourns, whimpers at the loss of contact. It’s needed, though. He scrambles back, hand slapping at his neck to force the peeled patch back down over his scent gland. He backs up till his spine knocks against the bathroom stall.
“You are in heat at award show? Why would you hide this? Why would you not call out sick? Are you—are you insane? You care this much about trophy?”

Summary
"You don't see the problem," Buck says finally, in as measured a tone as he can, "with getting married to me. For tax purposes."
"Not just tax purposes," Eddie says indignantly, like that's Buck's main sticking point. Buck finally turns his head and looks at him. Still stupid. Still beautiful, in a light-colored Henley that makes his skin glow, his long fingers curled around the neck of the beer bottle resting on his knee. His big brown eyes and the encouraging little smile on his lips, like he's offering Buck a special treat, instead of a lifelong fucking commitment of platonic marriage. Buck wants to kiss him, or maybe strangle him. Either one would serve Eddie right.
Or: Eddie proposes marriage (platonically). Buck spirals.

Summary
“She hates me,” Eddie tells him, refusing at this juncture to provide any further explanation. Buck will understand. He always does.
Buck snorts. “Eddie, the cat does not hate you. She’s just weird around men. You know that.” Buck seems to stop whatever task he’s doing, the whirring of what he assumes is Buck’s stand mixer coming to a pause. He hears shuffling as Buck drops himself into a chair, a soft huff escaping him. “What’s going on?”
Eddie sighs, pushing his chair back and standing—admitting defeat. “I was drinking my coffee at the table, and then she jumped up and got mad that I was there. It’s my table, Buck.”
He hears Buck trying to smother a laugh, and he does not appreciate it.
“She’s a cat, Eddie. She’s settling in—maybe a little bit asserting dominance.”
“Dominance? Buck, it’s my house. She’s a guest.”
