Their outside shot at a wild card slot ended at home in Boston in mid-February, when the math just didn’t work out in their favour anymore.
Ilya wasn’t surprised when he was called into a meeting with the GM the next day. The way he’d been holding out on contract extension talks, and the way the team’s season had been trending, he was honestly surprised it had taken that long.
Before he can make the move to Ottawa in free agency, Ilya is traded to the Detroit Overdrive for the remainder of the season. It's only a temporary move to bolster their playoff prospects, but it still puts a hell of a wrench in some carefully laid plans. And once one piece of the plan changes, who knows what the ripple effect will be on the rest. -

While Shane and his mother have a moment, David and Ilya find a connection of their own over carbs, college, and silly straws.

Instead, Hollander gives him the smallest half-nod, barely there, and walks into the arena.
OR: One bad World Juniors drops Ilya Rozanov to sixth overall in the draft and Shane Hollander goes first. Rozanov decides he’s going to spend his career proving the league wrong. What he doesn’t plan on is becoming fixated on Hollander in the process. On the way he plays, the way he watches Rozanov right back. Somewhere along the way, it stops being about the league’s attention and starts being about keeping Hollander’s.

Shane’s ex-girlfriends keep coming out as queer. He’s trying to be supportive, he really is, okay? Listen, he’s an ally! But it’s sort of becoming a problem. For pretty obvious reasons, because people are definitely starting to notice—Ilya most of all.
(AKA, I give Shane the most absurd queer community and convoluted coming-of-age journey of all time and it still somehow gradually makes things better in the long run.)
