Summary
Verso's smile widened, and Gustave knew with crystal clarity that the universe had a sick sense of humor. His Friday night blues had just become his Monday morning colleague.
"We've met," Verso said easily, still watching Gustave with those piercing eyes. "Haven't we, Gustave?"
The use of his full name was deliberate. Not a question, not a tease. A claim. It landed in Gustave’s gut like a stone, heavy and cold, followed by the slow bloom of heat at his throat where the bruises still ached.
He was so, so fucked.
Or: they say when you love a character so much you'd inevitably write them taking it up the ass

Summary
The girl’s shoulders hunch again. An expression is battling on her face. Guilt again, and fear, and shame. And then faintly, in the soft turn of her cheek, commiseration. She watches Gustave for a long, sad moment, and then turns to a new page in the notepad. She starts writing something, and then stops, glancing furtively at Gustave before scribbling it out. On a new line she instead writes in big bold letters:
Maelle.
OR
Gustave is the local mechanic of Lumiere, an idyllic coastal village far away from the chaos and conflict of Paris. Struggling with his recent injury and the loss of a good friend, he's not quite prepared when a family moves into the abandoned Manor on the edge of town.
He's definitely not prepared for their children.

Summary
The VHS had been passed around as some great wicked secret. Watch this, they said, and something terrible will happen. I wrongly took that to mean it was some kind of snuff film or unedited footage of some great atrocity. I assumed if you watched the video you would see something terrible. I didn’t realize–- No one ever said that. I was just sixteen and stupid and that’s what I assumed.

Summary
Maelle looks at the mirror shards scattered across the floor, a disarray of sharp and jagged pieces that can never be put back together again. "I know you’re not him..." she admits in a shaky whisper. Her tear-filled eyes find Verso, the blues and greys of paint starting to unravel the edges of them, mocking him. "But you deserve to be happy,” she says. We deserve to be happy, she means.
“I deserve to be myself,” Verso says, and it sounds like a plea more than anything else. The skin around his left eye aches, as if it’s waiting for his scar’s return.
Maelle sighs before she sweeps her hand through the air, calling for her rapier. It appears in a flutter of gold petals, glimmering in the dim light of the bathroom. Her eyes are cast in shadow and her disappointed smile is somewhat crooked. "Alright. Let's try again."
or: Maelle wants a happy end for everyone she cares about, and she will keep trying until even Verso gets it right.

The first time it happens, it's a complete accident. The times after that, well... not so much.
When the line between chance and choice begins to blur, Gustave must decide if he trusts Verso enough to put his life — and his heart — in his hands.
Again, and again, and again.
Or: Five times Verso takes Gustave's hand to protect him, from the world as well as from himself — and one time Gustave returns the favor.

Verso didn't expect to meet his soulmate in a bakery. He also didn't expect said soulmate to be the only man in the capital unable to recognize the crown prince by name.
He isn't complaining, this is the first time in years he's been able to exist as himself and not as an extension of his family.
Surely, it won't hurt to keep up the pretense for a little while?

The cafe where Ignis and Gladio have lunch on Tuesdays isn't particularly busy this week. It's a good thing, because Ignis doesn't want to broach this subject where someone might overhear and report it back to the tabloids. "Tell me," he says, when their server has brought their meals, "has Noctis ever spoken to you of any…romantic inclinations?"
Gladio chokes on his sandwich, and has to take a few long drinks of water. Ignis hadn't thought it was that shocking of a question, but perhaps Gladio's misunderstood his intent. He's about to clarify when Gladio says, "He talked to you about Prompto too?"

Summary
Jenova's death poisoned Gaia from the inside, and she withered away. Gaia rewinds time and starts over, again and again and again. Failure after failure leaves the planet desperate.
If the Hero remembers, so too does the Son of the Calamity. The stronger she makes her Hero, the stronger Jenova makes her Son.
To make a change that mattered, Gaia had to keep it small. Thirteen changes across eons cascade into differences significant enough to hopefully save the planet.
Cloud is reborn into a different world, a different Nibelheim. Joining a Shinra like never before with his two military working dogs, he's fast tracked into Public Security Forces. SOLDIER not even a consideration and out of reach for Cloud.
He makes new friends, different enemies, and attracts the unwanted attention of a silver-haired general all the while feeling as if the entire world is weighing on his shoulders though he doesn't know why.
Or: The planet makes a few changes. Cloud remembers nothing but feels an odd overwhelming sense of doom. He has two new dog companions to help him navigate his new life that seem to cause more shenanigans than actually help. And Sephiroth has a curious hobby of cloud watching.

With a couple of years of perspective, court-mandated therapy, and a prescription for antidepressants, Seifer could probably admit that it would have all been a lot easier if he’d just asked Squall if he wanted to get his dick sucked, and put his fist through a wall if he’d been turned down. Through gritted teeth, admittedly, and not within the hearing of anyone who’d actually been there, but still. After a couple of beers, anyway. Very, very quietly. Maybe.

He accepts them all, as he is supposed to. Despite his reservations, he follows every tradition too, even when he truly doesn't want to.
Meanwhile Cloud, after being forcibly taken from his homeland and claimed by the man who conquered it, has to understand this new life he's been forced into.

Summary
Ignis pulls a whistling kettle off of the stove. Noctis twitches at his side, a threadbare sock tickling his thigh under a heavy knit blanket. Gladio must be nearby, too; Prompto can hear the deep rumble of his voice, sending a shiver down his spine unbidden.
Maybe there’s no one here at all.
He’s lying still enough to be dead, he thinks.
At least he can hardly feel the cold anymore.Prompto can take care of himself. He's mastered the art of it in the years he's spent on his own, carefully weaving a delicate veil of explanations for the prince and his entourage.
He can juggle his classes, his work, and the endless piles of bills in the entryway. He can get by on the meager scraps left for groceries when rent is due.
At least until a frozen pipe and an ever observant advisor make it impossible to keep up the farce.

Summary
Once upon a time, a prince was born amidst a long war which prophecy claimed he was fated to end. However, in an effort to prevent the prophecy from ever coming to light, a man betrayed his kingdom and kidnapped the young prince, and spirited him far away. The king searched far and wide for his son, but the boy was never found.
Sixteen years later, rumours reached the kingdom of a young hunter who could use magic, a skill afforded only to the royal family and their servants. Convinced that the hunter was not simply a missing soldier, the king sent two of his most trusted men to find this young hunter and bring the lost prince home.

Summary
"Steven Grant Rogers," a voice said from somewhere near Steve's front door. "Professional inker. Maybe you'd like to explain why you're leaving us messages about our good friend Bucky?"
The redhead currently pinning Steve to the couch said, "Really?"
"Alright, her good friend Bucky. My tolerated friend Bucky."
"My phone's on the table," Steve ground out. "Grab it, have a look at the last picture."
The guy grabbed it, and his obvious double-take would have been funny if Steve wasn't being crushed into his couch. He held it out and the redhead peered at it. "It could be fake."
"That's right," Steve said, digging down for all the sarcasm that existed in his skinny body. "I scribbled all over my own thighs and took a photo so I could lure a pair of hostile weirdos to my apartment. That's how I enjoy spending my time."
"You know what this means, right?" the guy said, sounding deeply bemused. "Bucky has a soulmate."
