The thing about making a key duplicate, especially from a cheap stall on the side of the road, is that the locksmith will take a random template of uncertain quality for your key. It can be smooth, it can be rusty, it can be sturdy, and it can be glossy. The point is, the key still opens the same door, its physical qualities barely matters, it always changes.

Summary
It's the first winter after Pitch's defeat. Jack is happy, he's not alone anymore, and his memories are gradually returning. But when a treasure hunt gone wrong puts Jack and Jamie in danger, flinging them through time and space, they find themselves on an island neither of them have heard of before. Jack's first priority is to get Jamie home safe, but Berk's inhabitants - human and otherwise - are certainly not making it easy.
Knowing they will leave Berk and the Vikings behind as soon as they know how to, Jack is not going to risk the pain of growing close to any of these people (or dragons, for that matter). But Hiccup Horrendous Haddock, wearing his heart on his sleeve, doesn't seem to want to take the hint.

Summary
Gods can tell when something supernatural is near. It is palpable, an almost solid weight in the atmosphere. When nearing Olympus, the thin mountain air becomes thick and heavy with divinity, pouring out over every gilded surface, glinting in the sunlight. Hermes knows what power feels like unencumbered and free flowing. How it sparks out of the fingertips of heroes, and settles softly like dewdrops in the hair of nymphs.
This? This was different.

Percy gets to grow up and live his life as the alpha Hero of Olympus. Hermes, the very definitely an alpha god of travel, thieves, and sneakiness gets his staff stolen by a small giant. In one World, a world without alphas and omegas but also with fewer happy endings, this happened before a new set of trials for gods and demigods and Hermes tasked a teenage Percy and Annabeth to help him get it back. In this World, Percy is living a mostly peaceful life, aside from occasionally helping some stranded half-bloods along, but a giant still steals Hermes' staff. In this World, Hermes attempts to get his staff back himself. Percy still ends up helping.

Now, Charon did not know much about his new associate other than he was supposed to be fast, very fast. Even then, it was probably going to be annoying, since any form of change was always annoying.
Then suddenly, there was laughter in the Temple of the Styx.

Hermes was almost beside himself with excitement! Chthonic gods were fascinating, and the boatman was no exception. He had to get closer, maybe fly in circles around him a few times, or even steal his hat, just to see what the other would do. A partnership with someone far removed from his family sounded exactly like the thing he needed.
