The morning after the Sheffields dinner Anthony tells Kate he would break off the engagement with Edwina. The conversation reveals that Anthony was scared of dying young and leaving a heartbroken widow behind and when he learns that Edwina is in love with him he wants to break off the engagement even more. Kate confesses that she wanted to marry him herself and Anthony is stunned; he hadn't known that Kate returned his feeling. He asks her to run away with him and initially, Kate refuses - she could never do that to her sister.
Anthony confesses his love for Kate and asks her to run away with him again. He is suddenly ready to embrace the love. Kate is confused about his change of heart but she can't eep lying to herself - she loves him too. They agree to elope to Gretna green immediately. (chapter 1)

The railings were cold, freezing under his hands and his shoes slipped on the metal as he climbed up it, the propellors cutting the glass of the water under his feet and he could feel the engine whirring away under his feet and it seemed fitting, somehow, that there would be no one here to see him like this now. When his entire family had begged him not to do this in the first place.
There were tears rolling down his cheeks, freezing in the night air and his breath was coming in painful gasps as he clung to the railing and his body shook as he stared down at the pocket watch that had once meant so much to him.

Summary:
When his father died, Anthony discovers they have no money (they have only the respectful name) and to save his family he's engaged to Cressida Cowper, an American with a lot of money but no aristocratic name for English nobility. He meets Kate in the dock when she runs into him and drops her sketchbook and he is instantly mesmerized; Crssida and her mother insult poorer passengers and when Anthony defends them they laugh because they think he's joking.
At dinner, Anthony realizes what kind of life he's selling himself to and has a panic attack; he runs onto the deck and climbs the railing when Kate's voice stops him (chapter 1)Kate's backstory. She's traveling to America with Mary and Edwina to find a job there and support her family. She sees Anthony climb the railing and stops him and realizes it's the handsome man she's met earlier that day.
They connect; Anthony tells her the watch he's holding in his hand belonged to his father who died; Kate relates to that. She convinces Anthony to return to the deck and when he slips over the railing, she catches him and gets him to safety. They fall down (Kate ends up straddling him by accident) and are interrupted by Cressida who demands to know what Kate is doing to her fiance. (chapter 2) -
