“Hurt or captured.”
Dream nodded. “My absence in 1989 was not intended. An amateur occultist, in hopes of coercing my sister into resurrecting his son, accidentally summoned and trapped me. He begged for gifts that were not mine to give, nor his to receive.”
Dream’s hands shook slightly, but Hob couldn’t tell if they were shaking from anger or nerves.
“The spell cut off my powers, and they sealed my unclothed physical form in a sphere of glass and iron.”
“You were trapped for over 30 years?!”
Dream shook his head, and Hob breathed a sign of relief until…
“A hundred and five, give or take a few months.”
“Oh love.”
“I had a loyal companion, Jessamy, my raven. They killed her a decade in, after she saved her murderer from a beating. And I was alone. I have not eaten, breathed or spoken much for a very long time, I hope you can forgive my inability to speak much.”
“Dream, there’s nothing to forgive. I— can I hug you?”
He froze.

“Do not touch me, Desire.”
The gentle older brother that had once adored them so so much, hissed at them, flinching as though their touch burned like acid.
“What? But— but you desire it!”
“No. I don’t.” Dream wrenched himself out of Desire’s embrace.
“Don’t try to hide your desires from me, Sweet Dream. You want hugs and touch, and comfort, and I’m offering it to you!”
“I don’t desire it from you. I don’t want you to touch me. I don’t want you to approach me. I don’t want you to even talk to me, lest the stars lose sanity again.”
"Sweet Dream, I–"
Dream strode away, letting his blades fade into shadows. "Do not call me Sweet Dream. You and your twin have eviscerated any sweetness I had in my heart for you."
"Dream, wait, please."
The sheer amount of desperation in their voice caused Dream to stop, if only for half a moment.
"We– I didn't mean for our games to– to go that far. I just wanted you–"
"They did."

“Do you truly believe I feel nothing, little dream?” He knocked away the sunglasses, starry eyes meeting rows of teeth.
The Corinthian nodded tightly, trying not to dislodge his creator’s hand. It would have physically hurt him to admit how euphoric the touch of his maker was. “Millennia by your side. And it took you weeks to even notice that I had left the Dreaming.”
“I noticed the moment you left, Corinthian. The very second you crossed the border into the Waking.” Dream brushed a thumb over Corinthian's fine cheekbone. "I hoped you might return of your own volition. My masterpiece. I hoped the millennia by my side would have wrought a sense of loyalty to me.” Dream brought up his other hand, running it through Corinthian’s hair. “It didn’t. It broke my heart instead."

“It is… flourishing. Mostly repaired or improved. Should not take much longer before the realm itself is fully repaired. Then I will have to recreate the arcana that were lost to the Waking.”
“Sounds exhausting.”
“It is.” Dream snuggled into Hob even more, “But I have a beautiful lover to spend time with after.”
Hob chuckled, rubbing a thumb along Dream’s cheekbone. “Always, pet.”
Dream looked up at Hob, eyes filled with reverence. And stars. There were stars in his eyes. Like very literal stars. Shining little pinpricks of light. Stars. Stars.
"Woah."
"Hm?" Dream nuzzled into Hob's hand, confused why his ministrations had stopped.
"Your eyes, they– they're stars. Like a night sky. Before the industrial revolution."

“I may not be able to stay a week, indeed. I have left Lucienne in charge, but I must return if she has need of me.”
“You and I both know that Lucienne could easily rule the whole damn universe if she wanted to.”
Dream chuckled, taking a seat on the blue bench that provided a beautiful view out of the window, leaving room for Hob to settle in beside him.
His friend dropped down with a content sigh, and looped his arm around Dream’s.
“How has the decade been treating you, my friend? What does your current life entail?”

Hob is pacing across his living room, no doubt wearing a path into his brand new carpet. He feels a pang of guilt, after all, it’s only twenty seven years old, he intends to make it last.
Aziraphale tuts, stirring his teacup with a stick of peppermint. “I’m sorry, Hob. I know how that must feel.”
“Do you?” Hob fumes, still upset that he couldn’t read the rest of Tolkien’s works. Or unworks, perhaps. They remained unwritten.
“No, he doesn’t.” Crowley calls up from where he is sprawled in front of the fireplace, basking in the warmth, “Dump the arsehole.”
Aziraphale splutters, choking on his tea. “Crowley!”
“What? Would you not do that to me if I told you I had a copy of that Nutter prophesy book that I won’t let you read or examine?”
A meaningful pause.
