Jacobin Mugatu has three problems.
The first is Clive Colesworth — a British minimalist with a critical following, a Paris showcase, and a show titled The Grammar of Silence, which is the most offensive phrase Jacobin has encountered in thirty years of fashion and he intends to answer it with everything shouting at once, in perfect unison, including a llama.
The second is Derek Zoolander, who keeps showing up, understanding things he has no right to understand, and accidentally being useful.
The third problem is Todd.
Todd has been Jacobin's assistant for five years. Todd anticipates him. Todd absorbs him. Todd has spent five years communicating something with complete precision in a language Jacobin has been deliberately failing to read, and two days before the most important show of the season, Todd stops using that language and uses words instead.
The words are specific. The request is specific. The difference between what Jacobin has been giving him and what Todd is actually asking for is the distance between punishment and gift, and Jacobin spends the next forty-eight hours pretending he doesn't understand the distinction.
He understands the distinction.
