If you’d want to?” At that, Lance slowly turns around. The merboy is hovering in the water a little above him. He stays this time. Lance’s hands are shaking a little. “Would you want to talk to me?”
When Lance's mom gets a job at the zoo, Lance's family moves to live right next to it. Lance is beyond excited, because this zoo is the home of an actual, living mermaid. He will stop at nothing to become bff's with him.

He thinks back to before, and is never able to see how who he was then, and who is now, could ever be the same person. How they've lived the same life, in the same body, and be two completely different people.
