Kronika's plan speaks into existence what they assume to be a steady future in the New Era.
Stuck repairing a fractured timeline, Kronika's desperation extends. Her descent to madness is marked by the Kamidogu artifacts, a spiral leaving open wounds in the Sands of Time.
As new blood emerges through fixed points in time, the Black Dragon clan's heir pulled out of hiding in Earthrealm. Sacrifice and survival become a forefront.

While Earthrealm and Outworld bickered and fought, the creatures of the Netherrealm strategized and reveled in the chaos they had created. But some were exiled from Outworld for their most heinous crimes. Vampires, demons, witches—creatures usually seen in nightmares gathered here.
Sareena, Nitara, Havik, and Alex escaped the Netherrealm to hide in Outworld and devise a plan to attack Edenia. Even though Quan Chi had previously been their master, they all decided to simply escape and go their own way.

With Shinnok sealed, Johnny Cage lets himself believe his biggest problems are behind him. So much so, that he returns to the old reliable; another acting gig, a superhero film to take his mind off of the chaos the fights between the realms kept forcing him into.
But it seems luck is very unwilling to be on his side for once. Normalcy is clearly no longer on the table when events begin rapidly unfolding: portals, demons, familiar faces that he'd rather not need so soon, and a masked vigilante dressed in white so bright you'd think they want to be seen.
Forced into a classic mystery that needs to be solved, he has to figure out why the demonic resurgence has just started happening, who is to blame, and most importantly, what does his producer have to do with that weird hero wannabe anyways?

“What happened?” Kuai Liang whispered. His heart clenched—for Hanzo, and the gnawing sense of forgotten truths.
“Please, Kuai Liang—” Hanzo gripped his wrist, shattered. “Don’t… listen.”
"So it's him," Tomas's eyes narrowed in fury. "He's confused you, he's manipulating you, Kuai Liang, taking advantage of the fact that you've lost your memory, exploiting your kindness," he glanced at Hanzo, addressing him directly. "How dare you touch him after everything you've done, after everything you've taken away? Do you even have a conscience, demon?"
“Hanzo wouldn’t—” Kuai Liang stepped defensively forward, but his heart chilled. “I trust him more than myself. He’s never lied.”
“Snap out of it, boy!” Hydro cried. “You’re defending your brother’s murderer! Don’t you recall vowing to kill him?”

The Netherrealm isn’t scary when Hanzo is there, and it’s easy to be happy when she’s with the Shirai Ryu. It’s easy to be a family when she’s with them. If only the thought of witchcraft and wizardry didn’t remind her of stories about Quan Chi and Shang Tsung. The wizards were foolish, though, they wouldn’t even acknowledge that Mortal Kombat and the Netherrealm War were real.
Or: Harriet Potter frequently falls into the Netherrealm throughout her childhood, under the protection of Hanzo Hasashi of the Shirai Ryu, once the wraith Scorpion.
