Will stiffens, eyes snapping back to hers. “Who?”
She smirks. “Tall, eastern European, looks like he was carved out of marble and money. You’ve got the same dazed look in your eyes everyone gets after seeing him… He’s a third year. Experimental Psychology student. Thinks he’s God’s gift.”
“I wasn’t—” Will starts, too fast.
Beverly’s grin widens. “Sure. You and every other fresher with a pulse. Don’t worry, he’s harmless if you don’t feed the ego. But I’d steer clear, if I were you.”
“Why’s that?” he asks, forcing nonchalance as his eyes move back to hers.
She exhales slowly through her nose as she crafts her answer. “He’s like oil in a world of water. You can get close to him, but you’ll never really mix. That’s how he likes it.”

There are very few months out of the year where Saltburn is quiet. January through mid-April are when the Catton’s settle down and hibernate, but the rest of the year is fair game. July and August have their fair share of parties of course, but October through December see the most activity. With Halloween being James’ favorite holiday (he hasn’t given up on his raggedy suit of armor for five years yet), and Christmas and New Year’s being Elspeth and Venetia’s respectively, the end of the year sees many parties.
This year, Elspeth had insisted on throwing you a birthday party on top of the Christmas one she’d been planning. You’d tried to talk her out of it - you didn’t want her spending more time on you than she had to; you were only a guest after all - but Elspeth had insisted. She loved throwing parties, and she loved you, so why not throw one in your honor? You’d blushed at her words and decided not to protest any further. And if that had earned you a kiss on the nose from the Catton matriarch, then that was no one’s business but your own.
