Carl had Rick’s shoes to fill now that Michonne had fucked off to god knows where, and Negan can see it weighing on him. He knows because he’s been there, too. Knows how leading can be a burden. And maybe that’s why Carl seeks him out.
Because there’s also days when Carl comes to sit across from his cell, and Negan will immediately know that it’s one of those visits. Carl doesn’t talk to him. He doesn’t even really look at him. He’s just silent, checked out and in his own little world. Like he just wants somewhere silent to sit, sit somewhere where no one is asking anything of him- but just not alone.
And Negan can absolutely be that person for him. He wants to be that person for him.
| Or, a study of sorts of how Carl and Negans relationship slowly develops over time while Carl navigates the loss of his father and Michonne, leading Alexandria, and raising his two siblings...with the help of Negan, of course. |

They’d been out here all afternoon. Truth be told, Carl has absolutely no idea how he ended up in this situation. Negan had seen the dart board in his room, realized just how off his shot was since he’d lost his eye.
Negan asked him what Rick was doing to help with his aim, and Carl had just looked at him like he had two heads. That was the only answer the man needed, and he’d given him a radio that same day.
And somewhere along the way- Carls not sure when, exactly- things had changed between them. Because inexplicably Negan suddenly trusts him with a gun around him. He seems to know Carl isn’t going to try and kill him.
Or, shit, maybe he just thinks Carl is really that bad of a shot.

Judith looks over at her long dead brother who's suddenly started to appear when she needed him the most (which recently, was quite a lot).
“Were you ever happy? And did you ever feel safe?” She asks him.
He smiles, and nods. “It took me a long time. For a while I was just focused on you, and that was enough. Focused on surviving. But… eventually, I found something. I lived. And yes- I was happy. Close to the end.”
Her face lights up and she smiles knowingly. “It was because of him, wasn’t it?”

Negan raises an eyebrow and continues to play along, and takes a step towards him. Carl tenses. “Is she?”
