I wrote Eugene's view, then the lovely Lady_Rhaena inspired me to write Babe's.
Eugene can't stand to listen to the cries of his men, knowing he's been instructed to sit back from the patrol. It's when he finds out that someone is drowning that he steps in.

He thinks it's a panic attack at first. When his chest grows tight and he can no longer suck in a full breath, it doesn't occur to John that this could be something other than stress, separate from the crushing weight he carries with him following Dennis' death. Naturally, then, he tries to ignore it. He focuses on his work, even as the pain becomes constant and agonising and his extremities tingle from hypoxia, because it's fine. He's fine.
And then, all of a sudden, he isn't.

Only a few weeks after Gant's passing, Carter develops a spontaneous pneumothorax.
