Eddie takes a shaky breath. “Okay. It’s just, I think I’d like us to take our time with this before we start telling people,” he admits. “Not that I want to keep you a secret—“
“No, I agree,” Buck grins, feeling goddamn butterflies in his stomach, which is not new when it comes to Eddie, but what’s new is the almost overwhelming sensation of relief that accompanies them at the matching giddy grin Eddie is giving him because Eddie feels the same way. “I think it would be nice, having some time for this to just be between the two of us.”
“And Theo,” Eddie adds, nodding his head toward the table, beneath which Theo already has an impressive train track set up.
“And Chris?” Buck asks.
Eddie nods. “Yeah, he…” He clears his throat, not meeting Buck’s eye. “Yeah. He’s been waiting for this. We’ll tell him.”
Buck laughs and wants to kiss Eddie silly about that, but he settles for one more quick but firm kiss that leaves Eddie blinking dazedly at him.
“After the party?” Buck asks.
(or, Buck and Eddie try and fail to act normal in front of everyone in the immediate aftermath of their first kiss)

Summary
Buck could actually melt in a puddle right now seeing the look on Theo’s face as Eddie talks to him. Eddie hands him the bowl, paper bowl, with potato chips in it and he has what Eddie calls his concentration face on with his tongue stuck out like it gives him balance. He says Buck has the same face too.
“What?” Eddie turns back to look at him once he’s seen Theo out of the door.
Buck’s so in love with him.

Summary
Looking back, Buck can’t pinpoint the exact moment things really started to change between him and Eddie. It happened slowly, in increments. There were shifts in how they looked at each other, touches that lingered for longer than usual, and glances across the firehouse when they thought the other person wasn’t looking.
It didn’t end in a big, dramatic confession, but in a rainstorm surrounded by muddy puddles and laughter ringing through the air with the raindrops.

Summary
Suddenly Theo breaks from his pattern and runs towards the front door screeching with excitement.
"Where's he off to now?" Hen asks.
The knot in Buck's chest loosens. "He knows the sound of Eddie's keys."
"Teddy Teddy Teddy!!" Theo chants jumping up and down as the door unlocks.
"Little big man!" Eddie says as he steps in, immediately dropping the groceries so he can pick Theo up with a mighty raaah! "What have you been up to?"
He settles Theo on his hip as he kicks off his shoes, then leans down to pick up all three grocery bags with his remaining free hand. (Buck does not stare at the way his bicep strains under the soft white fabric of his Henley.)
"I saved a picken!!" Theo announces brightly.
Eddie raises a brow at Buck and Hen as he deposites the grocery bags on the counter.
"Don't ask," Buck grumbles.
"Please ask," Hen grins.
"I have it on video!" Chris calls through the open patio door.

“Do you ever think about me?” The question is so out of left field that the shock must be so visible on Shauna’s face that Jackie actually, physically cringes. “Forget I said that.”
“I, uh, I take the train to college every day.” It fumbles from her mouth before she can stop herself, an admission that she hasn’t even told Pete and Jules why she takes it, they just assume she’s lazy as if she doesn’t run every evening and is the only one of them that can make it up the stairs without stopping.
“Ugh, I hate trains. Remember I threw up all over myself when we took the train to New York in eight grade?” Jackie rambles to fill the space, to understand why Shauna said that. Shauna shuts her eyes tight for a second, formulating what to say, but all that comes out is a pathetic:
“Yeah, it’s why I take them.”
“What?”
“The seats are shitty and plastic and it would be cheaper to walk but they remind me of you, because you hate them.” She pauses, running a hand through her hair. “Jackie, did you really think that I’d forget about you?”

“Oh my god! And you—” Buck says with a dignified snort, laughing as he points a finger at Eddie.
The words jolt him out of his thoughts, Eddie’s eyebrows shooting up in surprise at the man across from him, who continues to giggle to himself.
“Your first shift? Oh, that was so bad. So so bad. Embarrassingly bad.”
Eddie blinks dumbly, his muddled brain trying to catch up with the conversation.
“It should have been obvious the first day we met. There were other guys, more than I can count, a few in high school and some at the academy, but god, the crush I had on you when you first started at the 118? Literally no comparison.”
Static.
That’s all Eddie hears. Loud and sharp.
Or, Buck drunkenly confesses to having a crush on Eddie, back when he first joined the 118. Forgetting all about it the next day.
Eddie, understandably, spirals over it.

“Really?” Maddie asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Alright. Let me put it in words you might understand.” She cleared her throat, and then, in what Buck assumed was supposed to be an impression of him– “You’re always talking or texting each other, you sing karaoke together, you do Buff-Fridays, you finish each other’s sentences–”
“Oh come on, that’s – that is so not the same thing,” Buck interrupted, rolling his eyes. It sounded weak, even to him, but he kept his jaw clenched so it wouldn’t show on his face.
“Why not?” Maddie laughed, like the answer was obvious. When he didn’t say anything, her gentle mockery slowly morphed into something genuine, her eyes softening with a cloying pity that made Buck’s skin itch. “Don’t you want it to be?”
or: Buck finally deals with his feelings, thanks to a meddling sister, a sippy cup, and a bedtime story.

It taunts them as he splashes through it, trying to leverage himself into different spaces around the beam. Together they push and pull at it. Together they wear out every aching muscle in their body and ignore every deeper twinge because if they stop, if they admit defeat—
That’s not an option.
But the water rises anyways.
The water rises and Eddie’s resolve diminishes with every inch closer it gets.
The water rises and Buck stumbles through it, creating tidal waves in his wake. It rises and his resolve rises with it. He’s not leaving Eddie here. He’s getting him out before the water rises above his head.

“You okay?”
Buck freezes, heart jumping right up to his throat. He turns a little too quickly, nearly knocking him off balance before a hand shoots out, wrapping around his bicep to steady him. Buck blinks up at Eddie and all the fight bleeds out of him as he throws himself into Eddie’s arms.
“Oh god,” he wheezes as he chokes back a sob, “Eddie, I—I’m so sorry!”
He feels Eddie’s hands — strong, steady, and warm — wrap around him before he is unceremoniously shoved backwards. Buck feels all the air punch out of his lungs when his back hits the firetruck.
“Who the hell are you?”
Buck’s mouth falls open as he looks at Eddie. As he looks at the person that knows him better than anyone else in the world. The person that he loves with every fiber of his being. He looks at Eddie and realizes that Eddie has no idea who he is.
