“No, you’re right.” Arthur ran a hand down his face, taking a deep breath. “You can go, Gaius.”
The physician left. Arthur turned back to his wife as she stood by the fire.
“Do you regret marrying me now?” She asked, voice soft.
Arrhur’s heart squeezed in his chest. He moved across the room, taking her in his arms when he got to her and putting his chin on top of her head.
“I could never regret you,” he said, running his hand through her hair. “I made the right choice. I knew that I could not rule without you and Merlin by my sides, you are the perfect queen, and Merlin has been my most trusted advisor since he became court sorcerer.”
“But you could have him instead of me, and your marriage bed would bear the same amount of fruit.”
He pulled away from her, tilting her chin up so that she could look him in the eyes. He ran his thumb across her cheek to soothe her.
“I never married you because you could have children, Gwen. I married you because I love you, and because we share the same feelings.”
He didn’t need to finish the sentence. Arthur and Gwen both loved Merlin, but they knew it would be selfish to try to have him. He would have to be a dirty little secret.

“You will make an excellent queen, you do know that, right?” Arthur asks, and there is something tender in his eyes.
Something in her wants to protest. She was the one to introduce the rust. She was the one who mixed in too much iron and upset the delicate balance of nature and magic and steel.
But there is also something in her that thinks—
A spine of steel cannot be too bad a thing.
If Merlin is sunshine, if Gwen is the fire of the forge, if Arthur is the steel between them—
There is something here, brighter than gold, stronger than steel, more enduring than iron. Something that will not rust.
They have to do what they can to make sure that they can actually get to that sunlight.
To get rid of the sorrow staining Merlin’s shoulder, the poison that is spilling through his veins, a sludge that will destroy him.
Gwen needs to be able to see Merlin’s smile again.
And Arthur needs that as well.

As the world faded around him, Severus Snape looked into the anguished green eyes of a boy he’d treated terribly. Severus knew he deserved this end: pain and bitter regret. When he finally worked up the courage to open his eyes, Severus was met with the sight of the hospital wing and a very young-looking Poppy Pomfrey. She informed him of his condition and the Headmaster's wish to see him. As he took in his location, her apparent youth, and her mention of Albus, he came to a horrifying conclusion. He was a teenager, and he'd just survived a murder attempt via underage werewolf. If this was real and not some post-death hell, there was no way he was going to allow events to occur as they once had.
