I very carefully set the gun near the xenonite barrier. “Need a word. Fast moving projectile launcher. This is an object that can make small objects go very fast.”
Rocky gets close to the barrier and seems to be inspecting it with his sonar. “Unfamiliar with concept. How fast can objects move with launcher, question?”
“An object is made for the launcher. Cannot be any object. We call objects ‘bullets.’ We call launcher ‘gun.’ It uses gunpowder to make a small explosion, which is powder made from sulfur, potassium nitrate, and charcoal- Carbon. In high oxygen environments this creates a small explosion that propels the bullet forward at 100 meters a second.”
Rocky scurries back. I would too, but I have the business end facing away from me and the xenonite barrier. “Are objects in this launcher, question?”
“Yes, I do not know how to take them out.” I point to the end of the gun that houses the bullets. “In Earth’s atmosphere, they would be safe to remove. But in a high oxygen environment like the Hail Mary, I’m afraid of causing a spark that would make the bullets fire anyway.”

Summary
When Rocky wakes up after Adrian, he's relieved they're both alive, but immediately knows that something is off with Grace. He's having trouble breathing, sleeping a lot, and spiking fevers. As much as Grace wants to blame it on lung irritation from the ammonia in Rocky's atmosphere, Rocky knows he's downplaying it, and it's not going to work.
However, before he can actually do anything about it, the ship's power goes out. Taumoeba have gotten into the fuel and eaten all the astrophage, leaving them with no choice but to steal from the beetles.
Which are on the outside of the ship.
Which means two EVAs and a lot of lab work for Grace, all while his condition declines from what's quickly turning into a serious health problem. All Rocky can do is make sure he has what he needs and try to take care of him as best he can from afar, hoping they can get to safety before Grace's health is too fragile to recover.Bookmarked by Scarlet_Secrets

After what feels like an eternity, the earth shakes. A deep rumble that Stratt can feel even from where she stands, kilometers away. Smoke spills across the ground, the trees shake, and the air feels impossibly warmer. It’s almost comforting in contrast to the teeth-chattering cold of the last few weeks. It’s just the winter time approaching. The days are getting shorter and colder, as they always do. The warmth will return in spring, until it doesn’t anymore.
Humanity holds their breath, watching as their Hail Mary shoots up, a beacon of hope. Their only hope.

“Adrian will understand,” Rocky says confidently. “Will be excited to meet alien. Will be excited to meet person who brought me home.”
“Yeah, and I'm excited to meet them too, but after that!” Is this a translation error? A cultural miscommunication? How is Rocky not getting it? “You're partners. They're not going to want some alien around while you're, like… going on dates and all that.”
“Does not mean no time for Grace.” Rocky’s starting to sound frustrated. Part of me feels bad, but the rest is just as frustrated. “Why think this, question? On Earth, just abandon friends when have mate, question?”
It's so clearly a rhetorical question, to which the answer is obviously supposed to be no, of course not. I freeze up anyway.

Summary
Morbid, that's what this is, and I don't want it to be.
I'll leave this part out of any memoirs, I guess, just mention it in passing. If there is any time to write memoirs: if Rocky gets me to Erid alive, and he and his fellow alien scientists are able to engineer some way to keep me functioning, then I'll jot this all down in their language and mine for posterity's sake. I've gotten used to chronicling. If I could get this story to Earth, everybody would line up in the bookstores to get their hands on it. They might even forgive me my faults. I'd read my book, too, but mostly for Rocky. He's easy to get attached to.
Not feeling like I'll have much time left for my memoirs today, though.I read Project Hail Mary last year but was thinking again about the period of time on the journey back to Erid where Ryland becomes malnourished and seriously ill and I wanted to write a couple scenes about it. Literary references included for my own enjoyment.

“Sleep. I watch,” he warbles from his post at the door. The first thing he’s said to me in hours. We haven’t talked about anything yet, aside from his pushing to prove I wasn’t hiding more contraband. I scowl at him.
“Don’t want to.” I feel like one of my kids with the level of petulance that seeps into my voice. I miss my kids. I miss having a place. I have a place here, I need to accept it’s just… Different. Still, I’m not gonna listen to Rocky right now.
Rocky grumbles at me. “Scientists say Grace hasn’t slept in 32.6 hours.” Jeez, has it really been that long? I don’t think I’ve had an all-nighter that bad since college. “Cognitive impairment begins after only 24. Bad decisions, dangerous thoughts like you mention. Why you are sick.”
“You left me.” I didn’t mean to say that. Too late.
or Grace is having a hard time adjusting to life on Erid, and it only gets worse when Rocky disappears. They work it out.

I laugh lightly. His voice is still off, but at least he’s respecting my wish to lighten the mood by making jokes.
“Blobs need to be flexible, don’t they?”
“Yes. Endoskeleton very fascinating.”
“For sure. Also, at the end of my spine, I have a tailbone. It’s a vestigial feature, meaning it’s something human ancestors once needed but modern humans have absolutely no use for.”
I hear him shift again, then he makes a note that I’ve come to realize is an Eridian’s version of ‘ugh’.
“Not fascinating. Inefficient.”

Grace grows severely emaciated towards the end of the journey to Erid. He uses this as an opportunity to teach a worried Rocky about the structure of his bones in a poor attempt to distract Rocky from the severity of his malnourishment.
