    Summary

"...here’s the thing, kid,” Burrich said, setting his mostly empty beer bottle onto the table with a thud. “You’re almost eighteen now, right?”

“Yeah, just about,” I said, a little warily. I wondered if he was finally gonna make good on all those threats to charge me a boarding fee for Nighteyes or make me pay rent. “Why?”

“So. There’s this thing, in your family,” he said, and then went totally silent. I frowned, confused.

“Not being able to keep it in their pants…?” I ventured, after it became apparent he wasn’t gonna continue.

“Don’t be crass,” Burrich snapped. “No. It’s a… it’s like a genetic mutation. Like the horses sometimes have.”

    Summary

”It’s not bad” says his mom, carefully. “Very Canadian, sponsors are happy about that.” That, and not much else, he can tell. A loon is neither masculine nor impressive. A disappointment, to those who hoped he’d have something like a wolf, himself included. His dad tries to bake him the traditional settling cake, in the shape of the new adults’ daemon, but his cake decorating skills aren’t great, so it mostly looks like a grey football. And Shanes’ strict diet doesn’t allow for cake.
