Or rather, the introduction:
This is a (meandering, non-exhaustive) overview of Homestuck’s use of Psychological Storytelling, by which I do not mean examples of psychological realism in a character’s words and deeds, but rather the various means by which characters’ psyches are expressed outside of themselves. I wish to elaborate on how thoughts, feelings, and desires may find expression in the environment, in the medium of the story itself, and in the form of other characters.
That’s perhaps a little vague, so here’s a ready example of what I mean: brainghost!Dirk. He talks with Jake, but since he is a construct of Jake’s mind, Jake is essentially talking to himself. Brainghost!Dirk is an alienated medium for voicing Jake’s own thoughts, irretrievably distorted through its intermingling with what Jake thinks/wishes Dirk would say (not unlike a puppet). I am claiming that this mode of characterization is not a unique to Jake; the blurring of inner and outer voices is omnipresent throughout the story.
Or, rephrased: what I hope to show is that a great deal of Homestuck is haunted with brain-ghosts, of one kind or other.

Quickly enough to almost stumble and lose his balance again, Jon scrambles backwards until he can see more of the carving at once. That figure-- ample, exaggerated curves, swooping animal ears at the sides of the head, a long thin tail, a gentle, benevolent smile--
An incredulous, giddy laugh bubbles out of Jon without his say-so, echoing down the cave until it sounds like there are at least three more people laughing with him.
It’s the same figure that he’s only seen fragments of until now, carved into clay shards dug out of the dirt. It’s so remarkably well preserved…
“I’ve found you,” Jon says softly, feeling a broad smile pulling at his lips.

It catches the chandelier light and glitters like emeralds and diamonds. Her hair is in pin curls, pressed close to her forehead and temples. She’s done it with soap, the way the humans do, not a miracle. It’s topped with a brilliant sparkling gold headband nestled just above. Her eyes are lined darkly, making the hazel all the brighter for the contrast. As she turns to Crowley, she smiles.

As she gets closer, there’s a strong smell of grapes in the air, the sharp pungency of tannins. The women are treading grapes, smashing them underfoot to ferment wine in the name of Dionysus. They hold each other steady by their arms, grip each other tightly. Aziraphale is mesmerized by it, the way they spin and the familiarity they have with each other. She circles at the outskirts, not wanting to interrupt them, but unable to stop staring.
A flash of crimson catches her eye, a tight but long braid of burnished copper, it catches the firelight and sparks even brighter. She moves in closer, unsure and yet certain. The woman smiles, crinkling the lines in the corner of her eyes, black snake tattoo just visible in the low-light. It’s Crowley. Heavens above, it’s Crowley.
