Henry's breath catches in his throat as he sees the flash of raw, unwavering devotion in Alex’s eyes.
In another world, he would have done everything to be at the receiving end of it. . . Here and now, however, it terrifies him. He lets go of Alex’s hands as the man lies back down.
“And because of this handsome peasant boy, the prince’s armor began to fall away. Piece by piece. Until all that was left was the piece of armor protecting his heart. Peasant boy pulled and pulled at this last piece of armor. But the prince held it firmly in place.”
He looks at the shifting flames before him now, and every blaze eats at the tinder and wood at its hearth. It’s becoming more apparent now, this thing that he has been avoiding since the start of this affair. The passion between them could easily devour everything at stake in their lives. But Alex isn’t the type to douse water on the flames—that’s just not his nature.

“You need a whole day of rest,” Henry stressed out.

“Can you stop being hostile to me,” Nora pulls harder. “just this once-“
“Me,” he can’t help but chuckle bitterly. “I’m being hostile to you?"
“Yes!” Nora nods, fully believing herself. “That or you’re just staring off into the void, numb. No fucking emotions at all."
Alex shakes his head, laughing to himself. He’s got about a hundred reasons why he thinks Nora is projecting but she doesn’t stop there-
“Your lack of self-awareness is alarming, Alex.” Nora says. She’s got her arms folded on her chest, as if she’s a school grade teacher and she’s there to send Alex’s ass to detention. “You came back after several years a completely different person. What the fuck happened to you?”

Henry’s the very vision of an expectant, life-giving father in the throes of labor; from the contours of his swollen chest and dark, wide nipples, all the way down his pear, oblong-shaped bump, round, full, and protruding between his hips. A network of stretchmarks and stark-colored, thin river-like veins travel from the bottom of his belly to the curve of his ass and the thick width of his thighs. Some of those were just recent, Alex’s notes. He knows the patterns of Henry’s body and can map it even with his eyes closed.
When this is over, their son safely delivered, and Henry recovered again, Alex will make sure to get re-acquainted with his husband and adore him for who he is. Strong. Beautiful. Exquisite. A man who is willing to carve a path inside his body so he could grow and give Alex a family.
