    Summary

She’s been scrutinized before. It never made her feel understood. People knew her name without ever knowing who she was; now they look at her and all they see is that little girl’s face from the magazine cover. Little League legend is a good thing to be when you’re thirteen. But Mo’ne isn’t thirteen anymore.

Meggie looked at Maggie and understood her—easily, entirely, and without judgment. Mo’ne wants that. She wants it so bad it feels like there’s no room in her body for anything else. But she can’t figure out how to bridge the gap between wanting and having.

“Mo,” Ashton says, poking Mo’ne with her pool cue. “Still you?”

Of course I’m still me, she wants to say. Who else would I be?

“Yes,” she says, too robotically. “Still me.”

    Summary

“I’m sorry, this is crazy,” Jam says. “I get religious observance, but there are exceptions for a reason. Like…you don’t just not eat and drink when you have practice and a game tomorrow. And it’s this hot. I honestly don’t think Maggie is that stupid.”

Michelle clenches her jaw. She wants to be angry, and a part of her is. The fear that gripped her left bruises when it let go. In a simple world, Jam is right, because only an idiot—a selfish, naive idiot—would try to fast on a day like this. But Maggie’s not an idiot. They’ve been friends long enough for Michelle to know that for certain.

They've also been friends long enough for Michelle to know other things. Like Maggie’s adherence to religious rituals. And her devotion to baseball, to her team. And how she tends to conflate those things in ways Michelle doesn’t always agree with.

(Or: Yom Kippur conflicts with practice, and Maggie makes a choice.)

    Summary

Denae has her cleats kicked off and is halfway through unbuttoning her jersey when there’s the click of a keycard unlocking her room. She only has time to frown and 180 before the handle turns and the door flies open.

Ashton storms in, slamming the door with enough force to rattle her teeth. “What the fuck, Denae? What did I just watch?”

She has Denae’s second room key. Denae has Ashton’s. They were exchanged with promises to only use them for good reason. Thundering in just to bitch Denae out does not count as a good reason, and Ashton better fucking know it.

Heat flares behind Denae’s eyes. “I don’t need this from you.”

“Yeah, clearly you do.” Ashton strides forward, and Denae has never backed down a day in her life; she’s not about to start now. “Who told you to run?”

    Summary

“It happens to you all the time?”

“Yeah, pretty often. I get it, I mean…” Jam gestures to herself. “You know. I’m pretty masculine-looking myself.”

“I know, that’s why you’re my man,” Ashton says. That’s the joke. The punchline is that they’re women. It’s a lot less funny if they’re not. It almost stops being a joke at all.

“You know it,” Jam says, with a wink and an air kiss. Then she gets thoughtful and adds, “But the point is, you could be my man too.”

Ashton short-circuits. That sensation is back behind her ribs, like her CPU is overheating. She wants to make a fist around those words. She wants to hold them, feel them, get used to their shape. She wants to press them into her skin and figure out where they fit.

Say it again, she almost asks. Say that again, please.
