Slowly, Sam closes the notebook and sets it down on the table, then raises his hands in a sign of surrender as he turns.
Barnes is holding a gun to him when he faces him, knuckles white from his grip on the metal. The look on his face is near furious, almost feral, but there’s an undercurrent of fear that he’s all too familiar with there too.
Sam supposes that’s fair.

They let silence settle over the moment, peace hanging between them, and the sound of the rain coming back to the forefront of Bucky’s mind. He closed his eyes and listened.
“What are you doing right now?” Sam whispered, obviously trying not to interrupt this very sacred moment Bucky must be having with himself. Bucky cracked an eye open and side-eyed his partner.
“The rain-- listen to it. Tap-tap, on the roof. Isn’t it nice?” Bucky whispered back.

Bucky began to shake. Sweat beaded on his forehead, and the sound of his metal fingers jittering against the grate scratched the air.

Sam leant forward.
Bucky flattened himself against the wall, bared his teeth and snarled.
Sam and Bucky find themselves with the unenjoyable task of clearing out old bunkers left to rot after the blip, and Bucky gets hit with a substance awfully familiar to him.

In the little house in Delecroix, Bucky sleeps on the couch. They don’t talk about the worn-down leather drum case or what it holds, not yet, but the case draws the eye. Whenever Sam’s eyes fall on the case he feels Bucky’s eyes on him. “White wolf,” he was called, in Wakanda, but to Sam “White Shadow” seems more apt.
He thinks they are that to each other—ghosts, phantoms, reminders. The conversation with Isiah Bradley wears on him. The man was haunted, damaged, bitter. The man was right, and Sam knew it.
He was wrong though, and Sam knows that too.

This thing between them is casual. It’s funny actually, they started fooling around as a joke in response to those news reports saying they have chemistry. They laughed about it, a lot, and it got to the point where Sam said, “Imagine? Imagine if we had chemistry — sexual chemistry?” and Bucky’s reply to that was, “Yeah, god imagine I kissed you and you liked it?” And well, then he did and Sam did like it and that’s how this whole funny thing happened.

“is there any hot water left or did you leave it all on the floor?”
“look.” sam stepped into the boxers he’d just retrieved from his dresser drawer. “just because you like to take five-minute showers doesn’t mean i can’t enjoy long ones. and you know, you could always—”
“yeah, i prefer to shower solo, but,” bucky pointed the book he’d been reading in sam’s direction, “thanks for the invite.”
“the offer’s always there. whenever you’re ready.”
he glanced back at bucky and found him smirking from the bed, his eyes still on him even after he got up to leave. sam lowered his head with a smirk of his own, passing over different shirts to allow himself more time to soak in the welcomed attention.
“like what you see?” sam asked.
bucky placed a hand on his hip and whispered, “always,” pressing a parting kiss to his cheek and disappearing into the bathroom, leaving sam with his face hot and prickling just from his touch.
