When he gets booked for the big Wayne Halloween party, however, he finds himself getting all tangled up with the Waynes, and the more fortunes he tells, the tighter the snare becomes.or: Tim just wanted to scam Gotham's elite, not end up on the Batfamily's watchlist. Tim twisted out of his assailant's loosened grip and saw - a kid, only a few years older than Tim himself, holding a tire iron in one hand and a backpack in the other. Tim’s backpack. He was thin, but more in a lean way than skin and bones, and he was glaring daggers at the man who had attacked Tim.
The boy swung the tire iron in a circle and stalked closer to the man, who looked oddly intimidated. “Get out,” he said lowly.
“I’m not little,” Tim protested automatically. The boy gave him a flat look. “Give me my bag.” He paused. “Please.”
“You’re a shrimp.” The boy kept the backpack out of reach. “Give me your name.” There was no please, which Tim thought was rude, but he had saved Tim. Ish.
“Tim. And you are?”
The boy raised an eyebrow at him, clearly amused by Tim’s introduction. “Jason. And you still haven’t told me what the hell you’re doing here. You tryin’ to get mugged?”
In which Jason leaves the Batmobile alone in favor of helping the kid getting mugged.

Instead of threatening her infant son with the boogeyman, Janet Drake tells Tim that Batman is going to come for him if he doesn't behave. Years later, Tim realises that if he wants a fast way to get adopted, all he has to do is commit a crime so that Batman will take him away.
Years later still, Tim knows that no one is coming for him, but that doesn't make him any less scared. It also doesn't make him any less interested in Batman and his Robins.
