Summary
Hundreds of miles away Kali collapses into the nearest chair, the news forcing a choked sob from her throat. She’s thought all this time Seven was dead, had died at the hands of the lab and their soldiers for her. She had mourned him, the grief carried around with her each day. She never spoke of him, none of her friends knew he ever existed, the pain was still too raw after all this time. And to find out he’s alive? He’s walking around alive, living his life and she had never bothered even checking, too certain in his death.
——-
What if Steve was number Seven but had forgotten over the years, and what if El was accidentally shown the wrong memory, not one of her but of Steve escaping the lab all those years ago.

Summary
Steve never tells anyone about Billy. He watches Max disappear into herself with grief and guilt but he can’t bring himself to tell her that he feels it, too. That he knows the loss is mixed up with hatred and relief, but is still pure in the way it pierces something fundamental inside of him, and he gets it. He just never tells anyone.
But then there is Eddie Munson, with a wickedness that feels wholesome and warm and slowly, Steve is starting to think he might want it. He just doesn’t think he can figure it out without first figuring out how to let go of Billy.

“Sorry, little brother,” he says. His thumbs trace the muscles in his neck. “You know. It was a neat trick. But I’m afraid you just aren’t that special, in the end.”
Or: In a world where after Eight escapes, and before Eleven, another child makes it out of the lab.

Summary
One night in November of 1983, a boy goes missing from Hawkins, Indiana.
He is just a body, a thick cuff locked around his ankle, chained with iron to a bolt on the hardwood floor. He is just a body, locked inside of a bedroom with an empty closet, a bed, a nightstand, and a cage. He doesn’t look at the cage if he can help it. He looks outside. He is just a body, staring out at a backyard he’s never been allowed to enter, where the grass is starting to brown from the heat of the sun. All he can see is dusty grass and tall trees, and a little shed at what must mark the edge of the property.
Only there is a body. Another body. A real human body—only, that can’t be right. Steve hasn’t seen anyone in … he doesn’t know how long it’s been, since the blonde man took him here. The blonde man doesn’t want him to see anyone, to be seen by anyone. All he wants is for Steve to be his, and to turn Steve into a body.
The other body is in the yard, moving on clever legs with slow graceful steps. His head swivels from side to side quickly as if he is looking for something. It makes his long curls sweep across his shoulders.

Summary
The last day of senior year hadn’t been spent in school but instead smoking out by the quarry. Billy had attended graduation the Saturday before and hadn’t needed to go back to that cage for the last week. He lied to his father about going but he would never find out about him skipping because he always dropped off and picked up Max on time. There was finally freedom in his veins for the first time in months. Because at the end of the summer he was heading back to California for college and would never have to see this town or fake family again. Or at least, that’s what should have happened.

~~~
Summary
“Harrington?” Billy cracked the front door open wide enough to yell down the hall. He waited with bated breath, but gave up and stepped inside after a full minute without any reply. “Steve, are you here?”
Billy moved from the entryway to the spacious living room but there was still no sign of the older boy. Quietly, with anxiety building like a storm in the hollow of his chest cavity, he continued down the hall to check the large guest bedroom and its adjoining bathroom – where Steve lay propped against the large white bathtub with his legs splayed out in front of him. The brunette wasn’t moving except to breathe and his eyes were firmly closed.
