For a fleeting moment, he thought an awful thought. Death would have been kinder. His dearest friend, the only person to show him unconditional care, to accept him completely, to even come close to understanding Erik and still choosing to believe he was a good person. Or rather that he could be a good person. Now he’d taken everything from him.
The bullet hits the top of Charles' spine, and Erik sees he is dying and doesn't just abandon him and leave him for dead in the sand BECAUSE WHAT KIND OF PERSON WOULD DO THAT??? Lots of Charles blaming himself and taking hits left, right and centre as long as everyone else is okay even though he's clearly not.

Charles Xavier is leading the school. Sure, Covid is taking hold and choking all of his hopes and dreams out of him, and sure he hasn't been sober in a month for even a moment, but he is running the school and he's doing a damn good job of it too.
Oh, and Erik is gone. But Charles doesn't need him. Erik's probably doing just fine without him.

In an attempt to create the best possible timeline, Dr. Strange decides the X-Men need some... restructuring. Specifically, if Charles and Erik had been openly gay from the start, they could have saved hundreds of lives. So, naturally, he swaps out present-day Charles and Erik with their 1963 counterparts to lead the school and take up the mantel while their older selves get to retire in peace.
With a cup of repressed sexuality, a dash of truly terrible hair (Charles), and seasoning to taste with unlimited pining, surely nothing could go wrong.
