“Do you know what that corner even is?” Ray’s voice cracks as he speaks, not leaving enough space for Mikey to respond even if he wanted to. “The type of people who work there.”
He says the word ‘work’ like it has teeth and will somehow become unrestrained and bite him.
“It’s Thanksgiving, Mikey. Why are you out there? Why don’t you have a coat?”
The questions waterfall, and Mikey blinks through the fuzz that has taken home behind his eyelids.
“Where’s Gerard? Why aren’t you home?”
Too out of it to ask, Mikey thinks. Gerard’s been that way for months- drunk sleep, heavy breathing, no questions. The kind of brother who forgets what bills look like, who still believes debts disappear on their own.
Bert always said it was good to take care of him, that Mikey was built for that kind of repayment. That it’s the only thing Mikey is good for. Mikey hates that he believed him. But it isn’t like he wasn’t a whore before he met Bert, it just became more consistent upon his arrival in his orbit.

Frank got a couple of good hits in before Ms. Valentino intervened and walked Mikey out of the class. Mikey was in a bit of a daze after that. He remembered how the pack of ice from the nurse made him wince in pain, and how he begged the office not to call his parents just in case they were home.. He couldn’t handle the embarrassment. He barely remembered the walk home. He remembered the sun beat down on him, like almost everything else in life. All except his brother, Gerard. Thinking about him made him smile and walk a little faster. Once home, he put his key in the door and unlocked it before shutting it behind him, putting his back against it as if someone were trying to come in and beat down the door. It’s not like Mikey could defend himself from an intruder if he tried. Mikey spent a couple of minutes there, leaking blood from his nose and the bruising on his face began to blossom in color. A familiar voice shook him out of his thoughts,“Holy shit what the fuck happened to you?”
