헤어졌다 재회학교 울타리 바로 밖에 주차된 매끈한 검은색 자동차. 학부모들의 오토바이나 낡은 해치백들 사이에서 지나치게 세련되어 이질적이었다.
부드러운 구동음과 함께 운전석 창문이 내려갔다.
거기 그가 있었다. 젠장할 피아스트리.
오스카는 창틀에 한쪽 팔을 가볍게 걸치고, 콧등에 선글라스를 걸친 채, 마치 내내 란도를 기다려온 것처럼 입가에 옅은 미소를 띠고 있었다.
란도는 보도 위에서 뚝 멈춰 서서, 수년간의 울화가 담긴 깊은 한숨을 내쉬었다. 그는 손으로 얼굴을 쓸어내렸다.
"포기할 생각이 전혀 없나 보네, 그렇지?" 란도는 화가 났다기보다 지친 기색으로 중얼거렸다.
오스카는 고개를 기울였다. 미소는 부드러워졌고 더 이상 거만해 보이지 않았다. "응, 별로 없어."
잠시 침묵이 흘렀다. 거리에는 소란스러운 대화 소리와 멀리서 들려오는 경적 소리가 희미하게 울려 퍼졌다.
란도는 차를 보았고, 오스카를 보았고, 이 모든 상황의 황당함을 느꼈다. 그냥 가버렸어야 했다. 무시했어야 했다. 그랬어야—
하지만 대신 그는 더 가까이 다가가 목소리를 낮췄다. "여기에 그냥... 나타나면 안 돼. 난 이제 내 삶이 있어. 학생들도, 동료들도 있고. 다들 수군거릴 거야."
오스카는 마치 세상의 규칙이 자신에게만은 다르게 적용된다는 듯 어깨를 으쓱했다. "그러라고 해. 난 그 사람들 보러 온 거 아니니까."

그리고 순간 — 무언가 끊어졌다.
의자가 뒤로 1인치쯤 밀리는 소리가 났다. 마이크가 그의 거칠어진 숨소리를 잡아냈다. 마침내 터져 나온 그의 목소리는 소음을 단번에 가를 만큼 날카로웠다.
“그 사람은 내버려 두세요.”
정적.
파문이 이는 듯한 정적이었다.
마치 공기가 빠져나간 듯, 카메라조차 멈칫하는 것 같았다.
오스카의 시선은 흔들림 없었다. 그의 어조는 크지 않았지만, 그럴 필요도 없었다. 차갑고, 단호했다.
“말했습니다, 그 사람은 내버려 두라고. 그는 이 일과 아무 관련 없습니다. 답을 원하면 저한테 물으세요.”
몇 초간 잔인할 정도의 침묵이 이어졌다. 그러다 누군가 펜을 떨어뜨렸고, 그 소리가 총성처럼 메아리쳤다.
PR 매니저가 한숨을 내쉬며, 익숙한 수습용 목소리로 개입했다. “좋습니다, 오늘은 여기까지 하죠. 다들 감사합니다—”
하지만 그 순간은 이미 세상 밖으로 던져졌다.
절대 목소리를 높이지도, 허점을 보이지도 않던 그 흔들림 없는 맥라렌 드라이버가 폭발한 것이다. -
