After Starrick's death, his daughter returns to London from abroad to mourn and settle his estate. Jacob is certain her beauty and supposed innocence is a Templar ploy, and his determination to prove as much sets off a chain of events that inexorably links the two of them.

It's an unseasonably warm morning, the sky a bright blue with only a few white clouds passing overhead like grazing sheep. Children laugh and run about in the distance, chasing each other around headstones, their parents smiling fondly as they do so. An average Saturday, besides the small group of mourners off in the corner. The black crepe veil shields Evie from the sunlight - and from onlooker's curiosity. It doesn't hold much in the way of anonymity, her Papa's passing is well known in the community but it still gives her a comforting weight to hide behind.
Evie Frye is alone, but she is used to mourning. So she will free London. To protect the people.

"Stop fidgeting." Father says mildly, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "We did come to an agreement that you would have three years of travel before we had you do anything of importance to the order, if you don't remember."
Jacob pulls a face at that, remembering the deal he made when he was 13, just before he started at Winchester College. He doesn't regret the deal - he's excited to become a Templar, like his father - but three years somehow feels too long now. So much has happened in the four years since then, but three years outside of his home seems too long. He's never left England before, and has spent most of his life between London and Winchester.
