She’s bleeding. The blood is everywhere. It’s running down her arms, dripping off her fingers, falling onto her kneeling legs, dotting the white tile. It’s on the razor blades, a nearby towel, the socks Wilma knitted for her over the summer, her shorts, her new press-on nails she got custom painted to have little phoenix feathers on them.
She’s bleeding.
She’s bled before, of course. The Bad Kids have gotten into so many scraps and killed so many people that she must’ve had at least a couple dozen different people’s blood on her, including her own. But she’s never bled like this. It’s never been self-inflicted like this. All alone like this.

Fig didn’t realize she was claustrophobic until now.
Like, how are people supposed to figure that out? She’s never been in situations like that, and even when playing hide and seek or something she would choose to climb a tree instead of go under the car or something. There literally wasn’t any way for her to know.
Now she knows, because every time she hears the water drain from Gorgug’s room, the walls of hers start to close in.

If not for the thunder of armored boots in the streets, shouting traitor, apostate, Kristen’s eyes hardening under the moonlight, the feeling of something irreplaceable splitting and crumbling for good between her fingers.
She clenches her hands into fists. Riz was wrong, for once. She’s never been good at making people stay. “You were wrong,” she repeats. “And maybe now you can wonder if you could’ve saved us, for a change.”
