    It wasn’t his first hockey fight, not by far. After decades of playing, it was impossible to avoid the occasional scrum. It just wasn’t something that Shane purposefully tried to get involved in. He wasn’t like Ilya, he didn’t find joy in pushing and prodding at the other team until one of them snapped and threw a punch. When a scrum did break out, he hardly ever joined the fray, preferring instead to focus on managing the refs and trying to get his team out of the fight with as few penalties as possible. 

    When Shane’s fist connected with Comeau’s cheekbone, Shane grinned.

    "He’d still been in uniform when an ambulance had arrived.

    Had still been in his uniform twelve hours later in his dorm, staring out of the window, the words echoing in his head.

    He had still been in his uniform when he’d smashed his fist into the wall until his knuckles cracked. He wasn’t a violent person but the anger, the rage, the pressure of tears unshed and sadness cresting, had been too much to not vent out. His fist had pummelled the wall until the boy with the racquet had found him sobbing on the floor.

    “Hey,” he’d said. “Hey.” His eyes had fallen on Neil, still in his uniform. “Take that off.”

    “It’s mine,” Neil had said defensively.

    “I mean to change into something more comfortable.”

    But Neil didn’t want to. He’d earned the orange and white uniform—had earned the number on the back of his jersey, had earned his printed surname on everything he owned to do with Exy. Taking it off meant admitting defeat. Once he took it off he wouldn’t put it back on. He would have no reason to ever wear it again.

    “No,” he said.

    “No?”

    “No.” "

    To be honest, the only good thing to come out of this scenario is the fact he doesn't have to pay for college anymore. That's a win in his book, because college was going to be very pricey and he wasn’t looking to be thousands of dollars in debt.

    Or course, he was hoping to graduate high school first before going to college, and then maybe go into astrology. And then go into space. If he even wanted to study astrology or whatever you call looking at the stars and whatever NASA does.

    Techno has skipped a few steps somewhere, and is now at the finish line before he has even started. Which is to say, he's currently in space. Further than even the moon, like Techno now has bragging rights for being the first human to ever venture out further than the moon. He’s never wanted these bragging rights, he's not even all that interested in space and those floating chunks of space rocks.
