"It's quite alright," Vinnie says, hoping his exhaustion hasn't robbed him of the ability to sound sincere. "Far be it from me to criticize what others find solace in when times are stressful. I really thought nothing of it."
His hands itch in their snug leather cages to be let out and mistaken for someone else again.
A small, appreciative smile curves those pretty lips and makes his heart nearly stop.
"You're a sweet one, aren't you." Mr. Corbeau cracks his neck and returns to his computer screen. "Most might take issue with the things I rely on Philippe for these days."
"I would never," Vinnie says, earnest to his core. "If anything, I admire it. It's rare to see such a special connection, and I apologize for accidentally intruding upon it."
Vinnie does his best to know his place. Corbeau and Philippe get other ideas.

Philippe thought he was over this. Really, by all accounts, he should be. Nearing 30, rooming with a man almost a full decade his junior who he'd tried to kill for the better part of a year before Corbeau soundly defeated him in a battle, and now… now this awkward limbo where neither of them know exactly what they are to the other. Philippe has been trying to get Corbeau to lead his gang for a while now, and Corbeau has kept refusing, and yet neither of them can deny that they need the other.
The real snag, here, is that that "need" apparently wasn't limited to business.

The place was a ghost town. An old Western wrapped up in the aesthetics of their respective cultures. It felt different to the syndicate’s humble beginnings. Halls this big–a place they had fought tooth and nail for to make grand and formidable–were meant to be filled with loyalty. With family. With respect and laughter and camaraderie and all the things Corbeau had painstakingly encouraged in the roughest people the city had to offer.
Instead, it felt like being a child in too-big shoes. Play acting at strength and power as a threat far greater than them was circling.
