    Summary

Astarion wasn’t sure what to think about the wizard, other than he was an intolerable, egotistical smartass, as well as a liar and a hypocrite. But whether that made him a threat or not was still up for debate.

On the other hand, Gale was either a fool for being so willing to help others or was a genuinely good person, and since Astarion had never met one of the latter before, it had to be the former. One of these days, it was going to get him into trouble, and Astarion didn’t want to be around him when it did.

He made the decision to interact with the wizard as little as possible.

So when he spotted the human in question in his frumpy camp clothes a little ways up the hill fiddling with a telescope, his immediate instinct was to turn around and pretend he hadn’t noticed him.

    “Oh! Good evening, Astarion!”

    ‘Shit.’

    Summary

"I'm leaving Paris," Verso says brusquely, by way of a greeting. He has never been very good with words; that has always been Papa's strength, not his.

Gustave inhales sharply, watching him in silence, his hands clutching his notebook so hard the spine begins to twist.

"You want me to come with you," he says finally, looking at Verso as though he has entirely lost his mind.

    Or:

Time is running out. With war looming over Belle Epoque Paris, Verso must make a choice between his duty to his family and the young Writer who has unknowingly stolen his heart.

    He chooses Gustave.

    Summary

Astarion wouldn't dare compare Gale’s very clearly lovingly maintained kitchen to a campfire and a chest of pilfered cheese and stale bread. But the feeling of it, the easy companionship, sharing the day’s burden of woes with someone who understands? That's familiar. And that, he didn't even realise he missed. Only now, watching Gale potter around his kitchen and chatter in much the same way he used to potter around the cookpot, Astarion feels… settled.
    Maybe even comfortable.
    Oh.
    Oh dear.
Before he can stand and take his leave, go back to the contract in Calimshan and pretend this embarrassing little episode never happened, Gale sets a goblet down in front of him.
Just in passing. Drops it off on his way to the teapot. Like he thinks nothing of it.
But it's blood. Fresh, too. Pig, if Astarion's nose can be trusted, which obviously it can. He takes a tentative sip. Then downs the rest before Gale has finished pouring his tea.
“It's warm,” Astarion says, nonplussed, staring at the now-empty goblet. It would be beneath his dignity to lick it. He's no starving wretch now. But it is tempting all the same.

    Summary

Gale is a survivalist romance author who writes about love after the end of the world. He's a divorcee who has plans B through G for power failure, but no Plan A for getting laid. Astarion is a former artist who decided to winter in the northern Michigan lake house he got in his divorce. He's not exactly rural-winter ready. When a massive blizzard knocks out power across the community, Gale—seeing Astarion's dark McMansion—trudges through the blizzard to prevent his idiot neighbor from freezing to death, but they'll both keep each other warm in the end.

This low-stakes, cozy, modern, the-Ant-and-the-Grasshopper AU softens both Astarion's and Gale's traumatic pasts to gaslighting, controlling exes who leave them lonely until they discover their strange neighbor is a better fit than they had imagined.

Note: In case you are unfamiliar with the fable of the Ant and the Grasshopper, the Ant prepares for winter by working all summer, while the Grasshopper wastes the summer singing and having fun. In the oldest tellings, the Grasshopper gets cold and hungry in the winter and goes to the Ant for food and shelter, but the Ant scolds him and turns him away. In our version, of course, the Ant is a bit kinder 😉
