They're both trying desperately to ignore each other, fighting against longing and loneliness. Everything comes to a head when a ship's boy falls overboard and James jumps in after to try and save him

Summary
“Do you wish to speak, sir?”
Francis looks to Edward, and for a moment he can’t understand what he means. Then he remembers, last words, respects, the formalities. What you do, when someone is dead. They would all think him mad if he tried to explain that all that was done already, all speeches, that he has said all words which need to be said, yesterday in the tent, to the one person who ought to hear them. That they had spoken, that James had spoken to him, lucid and awake, with the dead body laid out on the bunk beside them.post The Tent Scene, Francis is alone, feeling sick and thinking of what James asked of him in his last moments. He feels terribly alone, until a ghostly James appears, trying to comfort him. It isn't too effective, since James is still very dead. It seems they will, at least, get to have one last conversation

Summary
He hasn’t seen the man for months. In a way, James would like to pretend he has not been keeping track. But then, he was never good at fooling himself, only ever others. It has been five months and twenty six days since he last saw Francis. It should not hurt as much as it does.
aka
post-rescue, James struggles to fill his days. He struggles with just about everything, in fact. He and Francis aren't talking, and James has reason to believe Francis might not want to talk to him, or see him at all. -

Summary
The carneval goes worse than he would've expected of a nightmare. He can't tear his mind off it, off the bodies and the flames. And what of Francis? James can't tell if he is a steady hand to guide him, or if he is a calm madman. He needs to calm down, maybe just to take a walk... he ends up walking too far.
aka James almost freezes to death, purely by being stupid and reckless. Francis thinks he's deliberately attempted suicide

Summary
"It's worse than nothing... It's worse than anything in the world."
The year is 1853, and George Crozier has died. James travels out to keep his friend company after the fact, wanting to support him during what has to be a difficult time for the man. To his surprise, he finds Francis just fine, living out in the countryside as far away from the Admiralty as he can possibly get, and seemingly unwilling to discuss his brother's death. Being out there makes him happy, and he feels his spirit lighten the longer he gets to say out there, alone with only Francis, (and the groundskeeper's Newfoundland dog,) but he's starting to feel that something tugs at his old friend's attention... Something might be wrong. He only wishes Francis would tell him just what.

Summary
James’s mind recalls vague sensations of warmth and sunlight filtering through trees. A thought occurs to him and he laughs softly, “I don’t think I have the teeth for fruit anymore.”
“Hm,” Francis muses, “That’s alright.”
The image becomes clearer, and James allows himself to sink into it. He is lying in the soft grass, his head resting in Francis’s lap. Francis bites into a peach, juice running down his palm, following the path of these lines like the rivers of some uncharted land. James imagines himself licking it up with the flat of his tongue. And there it is- that taste of fruit again, sticky and sweet.
James blinks at the canvas walls of the tent, and the image fades to a haze in the corners of his eyes. The hard shale presses into his side.

Summary
Lit by the flattering glow of the fire, James is dressed for a night in. Over a collared nightshirt he wears a dressing gown, rather more like a tea gown considering it comes down to cover his ankles, and velvet slippers with embroidered toes that stick out just beneath the hem. Receiving no response from Francis, he sets the letter on the mantle and turns to face him, one hand on his slim hip. He rests his fingers in the tie around his waist—Christ, such a flimsy thing, would be so easy to pull loose—and gives Francis an appraising look.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you speechless, Francis. What’s come over you?”
Francis blinks. His hand flickers up to rub his beard again, but he manages to stop himself. “You.”
“Oh.” James’ eyebrows arch upwards. “Do tell.”
Or: Francis is inspired by James' casual attire and defiles the man against their fireplace. (Excessively adoring post-rescue smut with exactly zero plot.)
