Summary
Gideon watches him that morning from the corner of his eye. Loading up his coffee with enough sugar to rot, Reid moves through the bullpen like a ghost haunting the house. He’s sweating bullets beneath layers of cotton, his fingers fidgeting with his coffee mug in a way that makes it look like he might drop it if he doesn’t reach his destination soon. He finally puts it down on his desk and slumps into the chair. The actions seem to leave him breathless. Gideon knows these signs. He knows what the unfocused, blow-out pupils mean, he knows what the itching and the sweating mean… but to say it out loud could shatter any illusions Reid was still holding together.

Or, the one where Gideon is forced to realize his beloved protege might not be doing as well post-abduction and torture as he wants to pretend he is, and Reid is forced to realize his life shouldn't end on his own bathroom floor. -

When he was a child, death fascinated him. It was terrifying, and mysterious, and uncharted, and beautiful. The cowboys riding off into the sunset, the soldiers riding into battle. It filled every inch of the stories he was told. Fairy tales, myths, cowboy ballads-- his father sang him Streets of Laredo as a lullaby every night until he was six. He only stopped because it always made Soda too sad.
He had spent lots of time thinking about death-- anytime he’d look at the stars, it wouldn’t be long until he found himself wondering and yearning for something he couldn’t place. What was beyond them, if anything? What were they made of? Where did they go in the daylight?

“Okay, Buck, what’s going on? Are you okay?”
“I just keep seeing it over and over… and I don’t get it. How did we not know? How come I didn’t notice?” Buck continues on, ignoring her, and sounding younger and more scatter-brained than he had in a long time. “It’s so weird, Maddie. Why didn’t he say anything?”
“I don’t like this,” Chimney whispers to her.
“Buck--”
“I think something’s wrong with me,” her brother says suddenly, and his voice hinges with a sob. “Everything feels so weird.”
“Evan!” she cuts in sharply. “What are you talking about?”
“I just don’t get it, Maddie. I can’t figure it out.” There’s the vague sound of harsh coughing and wheezing on the other end, then, “I don’t understand how Bobby could do that to me.”

Summary
Dad didn’t understand Pony anymore than he did, even if he loved his son to pieces and would do anything for him. It wasn’t for a lack of trying, there was always just something about Ponyboy that few could decipher. Everything meant everything to Pony; there was always a reason, always another layer, always something deep and complex that he had to work through in order to understand it. To their father-- to Darry, for that matter-- those kinds of mind puzzles didn’t exist. Everything was just what it was. There wasn’t much to it. Still, always Dad listened to Ponyboy’s stories, wiped his tears, taught him to tie his shoes, bought him the books he’d mention wanting, even if he could never understand the well of tenderness his brother held inside of him.
Mom and Soda were different in that way. Mom especially.
Give him some time, honey, she’d say. He needs to feel everything first. Let him come to you.
But Darry was never a patient guy. There was no use waiting for his little brother to come around on anything.
Life can’t stop for you to feel the weight of it. Not even when it’s crushing you.

You couldn't have waited a day or two before I had to start taking care of you again?” He grabs his brother from under the arms and lifts him to his feet, trying to get him to stop swaying. He falls into Mason's shoulder, then pushes himself away in order to look at him.
“Been counting down the days, man,” Tex says, his voice barely a whisper. He looks like he's gonna laugh, but his face becomes very sullen when he says, “I'm glad you're home, Mace. I think our house is haunted.”
And before Mason can have any reaction to that, Tex vomits onto the living room carpet.~
