Their son held the violin out to his sister, winking. “Your choice. I wrote a vocal accompaniment if you’d prefer that.”
Her voice carried through the hall beautifully, a perfect complement to the instrumental composition. When the song ended, Aline nearly begged them to begin again. They could live in this moment a little longer. They could stay here.
But songs ended.

“Our daughter is correct—it should be daisies.” Aline plucked and tossed another piece of the rose. She sighed, staring out over the water. “I suppose I needed more petals.”

Alicia and Simon take the first steps to understanding this bizarre Manuscript that swirls with Canvas threads, to unravel it and bring Clea home before the Writers claim a second Dessendre.

“The other paintings made you feel nice,” Maman’s mouth curves around the word like it’s an insult. “What do these make you feel?”
There is a sketch of Maman—decades younger—sipping coffee in a cafe. Another sketch of Papa, robe open at the chest, settled by the fire with Monoco. Papa in profile; Maman in a sunhat in the garden. Papa glaring, Clea set on one hip, Verso on the other. Maman, asleep with Alicia nestled against her breasts. Hundreds of little moments committed to paper, almost thoughtlessly, none of the pomp or circumstance of their paintings.
“Loved,” Alicia murmurs.
(Aline is cleaning out the family's art. Alicia stumbles across a collection and wonders why it's locked away.)
