“You are not fooling us.” Mira states, coldly.
“Where’s Rumi, demon?” Zoey hisses maliciously.
“What!? Zoey, Mira, it’s me!”
Zoey smiles sweetly, it makes Rumi feel queasy.
She takes a step back, hands raised, doubt clouding her mind. What the hell? Her girls are behaving as if they saw her patterns, but… she made sure they were not visible?
“Zoey, look, we call Celine, she can confirm-”
“No need! Come on. We believe you.” Zoey cheerfully says, still smiling, her left hand open towards her leader. “Rumi, everything’s OK. We were just thrown off by your ruined costume.”
“However…”, Zoey uses her left index finger to point down, “…your patterns are visible on your tummy.”
Horrified, Rumi looks down on her midriff, and lo and behold, three centimeters of jagged purple lines are visible on her skin!
“Bingo! How fun!” Zoey exclaims, her distraction working.
Rumi feels a hit on her left shoulder, something like a solid punch, not painful but it throws her off to the side making her stumble. She watches in fascinated disbelief the rear portion of a Shin-kal buried in her shoulder, with its gold filigree tassel gently swaying, blood darkening the fabric around the hilt.Bookmarked by trollbot8

“You two are the new sets of hands?” Her eyebrows practically disappeared into her hairline as the girls stopped a few feet away, still on the crunching gravel.
The taller girl spoke first, her voice steady. “Yes ma’am. My name’s Mira. Happy to help wherever you need me.” She tipped her hat slightly, a gesture of respect she’d learned long ago. She could practically feel the younger girl vibrating with nervous energy next to her.
“Yes, hi! I’m Zoey,” the smaller one chirped, her hands clasping together in front of her. A wide, earnest smile stretched across her face. “I promise I won’t let ya down, ma’am.” Mira fought the urge to roll her eyes, a familiar groan tightening in her chest.
The older woman on the porch let out a long, slow breath and pinched the bridge of her nose. “Well, I sure hope Bobby knew what he was doin’ hiring you two. I’m Celine. Welcome to Golden Star Ranch.”

Summary
Rumi once heard that if the alpha was the beginning, the beta the middle, then the omega was the end.
She doesn't remember where, maybe some half-remembered scripture or idiom Celine had quoted, maybe somewhere in a book she had read. It was the kind of ancient wisdom that sounded profound the first time but never really stuck, not until you lived it.
Alpha, the first note.
Beta, the bridge.
Omega, the silence, the final note.
It wasn't until she met them that the words stopped being abstract, that the saying suddenly had faces, had meaning beyond theory.
OR
Secrets kept for protection become the thing that destroys. When Rumi's truth comes out during the mission to seal the Honmoon, the three of them are left standing in the wreckage with every wall down and every lie exposed. Now they have to figure out how to be a pack when isolation, control, and self-erasure are the only blueprints they have.

“ - t’sokay,” Rumi tries to assure Zoey, who's frantically hovering, but her words are slurred. “It only scratched me. I wasn’t bit.” Her back aches from where the werewolf had thrown her, but it’s nothing compared to the pain where its claws had ripped into her.
“Why’d you push me out of the way?” Zoey demands, and there is so much pain in her voice that Rumi wants to reach for her, but Rumi’s hand won’t do anything but twitch uselessly at her ruined side.
“Had to…” Rumi feels woozy, like she’s floating on a cloud, but she still manages a weak smile. “You were in danger… s’worth it…”
“Idiot,” Zoey sobs. “You’re such an idiot, Rumi.”
Rumi wants to laugh but it comes out like a cough, the sound thick and wet, as the red spills out past her smile in a rush.
Ryu Rumi was trained to be a Hunter just like her mother before her. Until one night a Hunt goes horribly wrong and Rumi becomes the very thing she had sworn to destroy.
Years since she fled Korea, Rumi firmly believes her past to be in the past.
Only she’s never been that lucky.

If Rumi said she’d always wanted Mira and Zoey to know about her patterns, she’d be lying.
When Celine suggested that Rumi officially become a Hunter at sixteen and start her own group, Rumi agreed instantly. When Celine warned Rumi about telling or showing her prospective group members about her patterns, Rumi agreed it was for the best that she keep it a secret. Besides, the patterns would be gone once they sealed the Honmoon, right? How long could that take, anyways?
It would take a while, actually, because Rumi forgot about the lead-up to a group’s debut.

The demon's swing catches Rumi square in the ribs. She feels the impact, feels something crack deep inside, multiple somethings, bones splintering like dry wood, and then she's flying.

Rumi had leapt back then, sudden and theatrical, leaving space between them. Mira had paused, wary, unsure what game she was playing.
Then Rumi had flourished Mira’s ID, plucked from her pocket without her noticing.
“Kang Mira, Interpol,” she’d read aloud, slow and condescending, like she was talking to a kindergartener. “Woah. The big guns are after me now.”
“How’d you—?”
“Picked your pocket just now,” Rumi had continued, eyes flicking up to meet hers. “Pretty name for a pretty face.”
“Damn,” Zoey’s voice had crackled in Mira’s earpiece. “She’s good. And hot.”
“Stop that,” Mira had snapped— both at the nagging voice in her head and at the nagging voice ahead of her.

Mira and Zoey are the Interpol agents assigned to the Ryu Rumi case, a globally renowned superthief. But the closer Mira gets, the more she begins to notice the quieter ways the case is beginning to take things from her.
