Till sniffled, pain blooming into a headache as he cradled his forehead. Freddie cackled, finding his discomfort funny. He lunged forward, his arm shooting out ready to gather a fistful of Till’s hair.
Ivan got his reason.
His katana made a sharp, clean sound as it withdrew from his waist. It happened so fast, no one processed the motion–until Freddie’s arm was rolling on the floor and blood was gushing out of where it used to be.

The room seemed to hold its breath, her question hanging in the air as Ivan’s smile faltered, just for a second. It wasn’t the first time he’d heard it, and it wouldn’t be the last.

The family's move to the old Jeonju house inherited from his Korean grandparents (thanks for the real estate, halmeoni and harabeoji, less thanks for the location) happened despite his father having lived in Toronto since college, making Korea mostly for brief family trips.
As the moving truck shuddered to a stop, a boy with ink-black hair watched Till's family unload, then approached Till with an oddly formal enthusiastic handshake.
"Hi," the boy's voice announced, friendly and loud, like heralding the arrival of a circus. "I'm Ivan."
Till's glance flickered down to the offered hand, then back to Ivan's face, his expression flat, conveying the approximate enthusiasm of someone whose phone battery just died.
"Till," he replied curtly.
