The clicking sound in her head vanished, replaced by the steady beat under her hand. When her vision cleared, she realized her fingers were locked around Malfoy’s wrist like she’d been bracing to run.
Malfoy watched her, unreadable, not pulling away. He was waiting for her to notice.
She flushed and jerked back.
His eyes widened. “You haven’t gone back—” His voice broke into a cough that folded him over.
Hermione blinked, disoriented. “There’s nothing left. Why would I go back?”
Malfoy’s gaze slipped out of focus. “No. Before, I saw—”
“Malfoy, you’re not—”
“I saw two of you,” he finished.
Her pulse thundered in her ears at an impossible tempo. -

Summary
For months, Sirius has been opening the door whenever Snivellus has knocked, and he doesn't know why. He hates it. Hates him. Circumstances in Hermione's research bring the two together for the first time since Draco's trial over a decade prior.
This is a slow burn from not-quite-enemies-to-lovers. WIP so please have mercy.

Harry Potter would be furious at being abandoned at his beastly relatives' house over the summer after the fiasco at the end of The TriWizard Tournament (and the whole year before it too, to be honest). He would be absolutely fuming over the fact that his friends completely ignored him, along with his godfather and Albus too-many-names Dumbledore, if he could feel much at all.
Instead, Harry's collection of traumas finally got to him and was not to be shaken off this time. In a desperate attempt at survival, his emotions shut themselves in a deep, dark place and left was a Plotting (with a capital P) mind and focus-driven goal. They will Pay (also with a capital P) in unusual ways - through laws and justice. A new concept in the magical world, Harry is certain.
But first... how does an emotionally distant (or even absent) 15-year old protect his cousin against two dementors descending on Little Whinging? With his wand locked inside a cupboard, no less.
The answer: he doesn't. Instead, he waves.
