Going into their last year of study at the University of Manchester, Sirius and Remus have been dancing around a blooming crush for the last few years. Everything comes to a head right before their last fall term together and both boys think they’ve made a terrible mistake.
“What do you think it means?” Sirius’s voice is quiet, just above the music. Remus turns, coming face to face with him. His hazel eyes are glassy, gaze soft as it flits over Sirius’s face.
“What do you mean?” When Remus asks, Sirius’s brows furrow, the slice through his right eyebrow almost disappearing.
“Fate up against your will,” Sirius repeats almost reverently.
Remus bites his lip, the movement drawing Sirius’s eyes towards it.
“It’s inevitable.” His voice is soft, bordering husky.

“What?” Remus said, finally turning to look at him and leaning in close. “You jealous?” he breathed in Sirius’ ear. Sirius fought the incomprehensible urge to shudder.
“Jealous of what?” he asked, staring fixedly at a small chandelier that hung from the ceiling. One of its bulbs was flickering, and he latched onto it as if it were the most interesting thing in the world.
“You tell me,” Remus said, leaning back at last and giving him the space to breathe again.
Sirius turned his head slowly to find Remus looking at him, a smirk dancing across his face.
But then, “Relax mate, I’m just messing with you,” Remus said, clapping him on the back before pushing out his chair and sloping off to Madam Pince, finished with his book.
Sirius was left there floundering for a moment. Was he jealous? Sirius? He almost laughed.
What did that scrawny, little year four have on him that he should be jealous of? As if.

Remus didn’t particularly love hogsmeade weekends during the winter months. The snow and the cold always made him reluctant to leave the warmth of the Common Room and the comfort of his book. It was Lily who had convinced him to go. She knew he had a weakness for chocolate and promised him a bar of Honeyduke’s best if he joined the group. He wasn’t thrilled. Besides, Sirius was going on a date with Marlene. Their first real date. It had been just three days ago that Sirius had crawled into Remus’ bed to tell him he had asked the girl to be his girlfriend after a common room party. He wasn’t sure why, but he had snapped at his friend, irritated by the subject for unknown reasons. Remus didn’t know why the idea bugged him so much – Sirius could date whoever he pleased.
