It’s Link, which is absurd, because Link doesn’t sound like that, doesn’t quite look like that, and also—perhaps most pressingly—Link is halfway across the known world, currently.
There’s a very stilted, pregnant pause as they look at each other, silent on the windy hillside. Zelda stares much longer and more pointedly than both her station and common niceties allow, before hissing out, “Why do you look like Link?” because sometimes the most reliable way to the bottom of a scientific conundrum is simply asking.
The man who is most assuredly not Link blinks at her. “Because I am Link?”

After the events of Tears of the Kingdom, Link and Zelda fell into a rhythm with each other as they reacquainted Zelda with the new-new Hyrule and offered the chance for many to welcome the queen home. No one was surprised when Hyrule’s most powerful couple announced they were expecting a little one.
Armed with a strict list of foods and approved activities from Impa, Zelda and Link continued their travels when Zelda’s time powers began acting up. Purah was sure it had something to do with the pregnancy, but the baffling results left Zelda bouncing around her timeline. As her due date approached, the jumps became more erratic and nearly so commonplace that Link hardly blinked when she looked up, confused from the breakfast table, and he calmly asked where she was from. Most times, she barely had enough seconds to ponder and say, “A week ago, I think,” before she was snatched back through time.
This time, however, as Link and Zelda prepare for the arrival of their little one, the queen is sent back to pre-calamity Hyrule, propelling a young princess one hundred and eleven years into the future and into the arms of a familiar knight.

She hadn’t meant to touch him. But her hand wrapped around his wrist, eyes flashing to his, drowning in the deepest blue before her palm lit aflame where it met his skin.
Horrified, a fire sparked in her lungs that stole her breath. Curious, her flesh crawled with interest at what would happen the next time their skin brushed in contact. Hungry, her strength waned, consumed by some thirst that she couldn’t figure out how to quench.
His eyes scalded her. She couldn’t read his face, features frozen into an emotionless mask, but she ached so intensely that she knew he must feel it too.
She knew how to sate it. This ailment that had overtaken her, that had consumed her body, she knew exactly how to relieve herself of it, what would cure her.

In his actions, he was certainly in love. Link rests his cheek on her head, brows furrowing. Eyes squeezing shut, a kiss is returned to the princess’s crown.
It’s quiet aside from the roaring blood in his ears.

Summary
His memories of the past remain few and far between. They are like two strangers, some days. A century ago – after Zelda’s initial grievances – they were able to find a rhythm that worked for them. They had slotted together like two matching puzzle pieces, reading each other like a well-loved book and adjusting to each other’s needs with the most minimal cues.
Zelda has always known, deep down, that Link would no longer be the person she once knew better than she knew herself. Not completely, at least. But it still throws her when she finds them so out of sync.
